REPORT SENIOR’S WOMEN STATEWIDE CHALLENGE ROUND 1.  12 December 2023

 By Ladies Director Madge Strochnetter.

Today found the players playing on a nice running surface with the men on the bottom green and the ladies on the front one at North Launceston Bowls Club. The day started out warm with some cloud cover which developed into a hot and humid afternoon. In the morning round, BN played against the Northwest team.

The rink of Wendy Smith, Lyn Cornelius, Di Byard  and led by Maggie Campbell  had a very close battle for the first 9 ends, then our ladies took hold of the game, only letting their opponents score 2 shots for the last 9 ends,  finishing with a very strong 14 shot win.The rink of Lisa Coppe, Janice Taylor, Patricia Freeman and led by Judy Gurr were in control for the entire game, only allowing their opponents to score on 6 ends. After a fine performance, our team finished with a 10-shot win.The rink of Carol Taylor, Maxine Viney, Robyn Zoon and led by Barb Smith were in an arm wrestle match, managing to stay just ahead. After a tough fight, the ladies held on to a 2 shot win.

Break time, as usual Maree and her helpers put on a wonderful 2 course meal for bowlers and officials. It was enjoyed by all. Back out on the green, the ladies moved to the bottom green and the men to the front one to face up against the Southerners.

Judy Gurr’s team had a very close match for the first 10 ends, then they took a stranglehold on the game and scored continuously for the final 8 ends, their opponents only managing a single shot for the northerners to have an 18-shot win. Maggie Campbell’s team found themselves in a hard-fought match for the entire game, with neither team able to gain the upper hand. Our ladies managed to keep up the pressure to finish 1 shot up. Barb Smith’s team were in a tough fight, with scores being level on the 13th end, but then the southern team found their rhythm to gain the upper hand and finish up with an 11-shot win, our girls battled it out to the end.

Thank you to the North Launceston Bowls Club for their hospitality to all the players from all associations.  It proved to be a great venue to hold the SWC Over 60’s event and also thanks to the greenkeeper, kitchen and bar staff, marker board scorers, umpires and all of the volunteers who worked hard for this event to happen successfully.

This was a great day for all Bowls North competitors, both male and female, as they all represented our association with class and dignity and did themselves and Bowls North proud.
