BN – Championship Results 2023-24

2024 East Coast Pairs

The East Coast Pairs was played over two weekends, Sunday February 4th, and the 11that the Scamander Bowls Club.

17 teams entered the 2024 event with the St Marys club having 9 teams. All players struggled with the heat in sectional play with 8 teams going through to the finals. From St Marys, Tamatha Grose, Gary Laycock, Ian Johnston and Jim Rankin progressed. From Swansea, Bridgette Cheek and Michael Dalla-Vecchia, and from Scamander, Michael Tunks and Grant McCormack.

The quarter final results were;

Michael Dalla-Vecchia & Chris Butler (Swansea) defeated Gary Laycock & Jeff Matters (St Marys) 18/11

Tamatha Grose & Danni Turner (St Marys) defeated Jim Rankin & Mick Sherrin (St Marys) 18/16

Michael Tunks & Tony Faulkner (Scamander) defeated Bridgette Cheek & Sandi Hodge (Swansea) 22/7

Grant McCormack & Michael Seymour (Scamander) defeated Ian Johnston & Paul Davern (St Marys) 12/10

The Semi Final between Tamatha Grose and Michael Dalla-Vecchia was an even contest with the lead changing on several occasions. With 3 ends to go the scores were locked at 14 all. The Swansea pair managed to pick up a 3 and a 1 to take out the Semi Final 18/16

In the second Semi, it was the two Scamander teams of Michael Tunks & Tony Faulkner and Grant McCormack & Michael Seymour doing battle. Unlike Semi Final 1, the scores were never really close and with McCormack picking up a seven on the 14th end the final result of 23/7 was a fair reflection of the game.

The Final was played out between Scamander and Swansea. The Scamander team of McCormack & Seymour began by picking up a 4 on the first end  and this trend continued throughout the game with McCormack & Seymour defeating Dalla-Vecchia & Butler 21/9.

2023-24 OPEN PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

Twenty teams entered the 2023-24 Poolmart Open Men’s Pairs Championship on Sunday 19 November 2023 at East Launceston Bowls Club. At the completion of sectional play the six sections winners and the two next best qualifiers played the quarter final round. Semifinals and Grand finals to be played at BN Finals Gala Day in March 2024.

OPEN WOMEN’S

With only two sections in this years Open Women’s Pairs Championships, with one of the entrants being junior player Jessie Willis of Westbury Bowls club playing in her first BN Open event. It cam down to the last last played in each section to see who would progress to the grand final of the 2023-24 Poolmart Open Women’s pairs championship with the final to be played at BN Finals Gala Day.

MINOR PAIRS:

Two sections of four teams played sectional play with the winners of sections progressing to the finals. In section 1, two novice players Exeter’s Brant Webb and Kings Meadows Gaylene Heron competed in their first Bowls North Championship event. At the completion of sectional play the teams to face off for the 2023-24 Minor Pairs title will be the Cressy duo of Janine Cashion and Les Dkystra who will play Kings Meadows pairing of Gaylene Heron and Cheryelle Pedley at the BN Finals Gala day.

BOWLS NORTH OVER 60’S WOMEN’S PAIRS 2022-23

7 teams competed in 2022-23 Bowls North Women’s Over 60’s pairs competition held on 6 & 7 December 2022 at Kings Meadows Bowls Club.

In section 1 in a low scoring game at the completion of end 8, the score line was 5 all in the match between Monson/Gurr & Cornelius /Rowbottom combination. Monson/Gurr scored 5 shots on end 9 to take control of the match in the 15-end match to go on and win the first-round encounter. 14 to 9. Fletcher/Huett side scored on 7 consecutive ends to be leading 14 to 2 against Saunders/Lee in the first-round match of sectional play in section 1.
Saunders/Lee scored on ends 10,12,13,14 but was unable to reduce the shots deficit. Final score was Fletcher/Huett 16 to Saunders/Lee 10.

After 6 ends in the Rd 2 match Fletcher/Huett lead 11-0 before the Monson/Gurr combo was able to score and pick up shots on the next 3 ends after s13 ends the score line was 15 to 9 in Fletcher/Huetts favour. Monson/Gurr picked up 5 shots on end 14 to be 1 shot behind with 1 end to be played. Fletcher/Huett scored 1 shot on the last end to win the second-round match 16 to 14. Winning 5 ends each at the 10-end mark of the second round match the score line was 11 -10 in Saunders/Lee favour against Cornelius/Rowbottom. Winning a further 4 ends of the 15-end match Saunders/Lee was victorious, winning 18 to 11.

In Rd 3 in a game in which neither side could gain the upper hand, at 10 ends the score line was 7 all in the match between Saunders/Lee & Monson/Gurr. On end 11 Saunders/Lee scored 4 shots to be leading 11 to 7. Monson/Gurr scored 5 shots on the next 2 ends to be leading for the first time in the match, at end 13 the score line was Monson/Gurr 12 to Saunders/Lee 11. Saunders/Lee picked up 3 shots on end 14 and held on to win the match 14-13

Starting well in their Rd 3 match against Fletcher/Huett, after 5 ends Cornelius/Rowbottom was leading 5 to 1 and picking up a further 4 shots on end 9 to have the score line 10 to 4. Cornelis/Rowbottom won the next 2 ends to win the Rd 3 match 12-10.

In Section 2 with only 3 teams in the section, it came down to the last round match to see who would win the section and proceed to this year’s final. At 6 ends in the first-round match, Ross/Bishop picked up 3 shots to have the score line 5 all in the match against Smith/Strochnetter. Both teams won alternate ends with the score line once again tied at 7 all at 10 ends. Smith/Strochnetter won the next 3 ends to be leading 11 to 7 before Ross/Bishop won the next 4 ends, scoring 4 shots and at the completion of the 15 ends, the game was 11 all draw.

Smith/Strochnetter then played Bingley/Middap in the Rd 2 match of Section 2. After 5 ends of the match Smith/Strochnetter was leading 6 to 3 and they scored single shots on the next 3 ends to have the score line 9 to 3 in their favour. Winning the final 4 ends of the match, Bingley/Middap was unable to cut back the shot difference and Smith/Strochnetter went on and won the Rd 2 encounter. Final scores were Smith/Strochnetter 14 to Bingley/Middap 10.

The outcome of the Rd 3 match would determine who would win section 2 and proceed to the final of the 2022-23 BN Women’s Over 60’s pairs championship. Picking up 4 shots on end 6 and 1 shot on end 7 Ross/Bishop was leading 7 to 3 against Bingley/Middap. Bingley/Middap then scored single shots on the next 4 ends to have the score line 7 all after 10 ends. Ross/Bishop picked up 5 shots on the last 4 ends and continued on to win the final match of Section 2, 12 to 9 and falling 1 shot short of winning the section.

Section winners Westbury teammates, Sophie Fletcher & Bev Huett played Kings Meadows Barbara Smith & Longford’s Madge Strochnetter in the final. In an evenly contested match at end 5 the scores were 4 to 2 in the Fletcher/Huett’s favour.

Fletcher/Huett then picked up 3 & 4 shots respective on end 6 &7 to be leading comfortably 11 to 2. Smith/Strochnetter scored 2 shots on ends 8 & 10 before Fletcher/Huett score another 2 shots to still be leading 14 to 6. Smith/Strochnetter won ends 12 & 13 before Fletcher/Huett won ends 14 & 15 to be leading 19 to 9. Smith/Strochnetter won the last 3 ends of the 18-end final and was unable to gain the shots required and Sophie Fletcher & Bev Huett went on to win the 2022-23 BN Over 60’s Pairs title 19 to 13

The weather gods once again played havoc with this year’s BN Triples Championship with all games in the Open Men’s, Women’s & Minor being transferred to the indoor centre.

Section 1 saw the composite side of John Borg (LBC), Garry McCarthy (East) and Brad Trigg (KM) played the family trio, Bayley McCarthy, Chad and Oliver Morrison. The Midlands/Longford combination started well to be leading 6 nil after 5 ends. The Borg side then went on to win the next 6 ends to be in control of the match leading 9 to 6 on the 11th end with the McCarthy/Morrison side only able to pick up 1 shot on the last end to be defeated by the Borg side 9 to 7. The Longford combo of Nathan Beck, Jack Watson and Graeme Tudor won 7 ends of the 12-end match to be narrowly defeated by the Borg side in Rd 2. With two solid wins in Rd 1 & 2, the Kings Meadows side consisting of Shane Gurr, Dennis Bassett and Paul Elmer played the Borg side in Rd 3 to see who would win the section and go on to played in the semi-final phase of the competition. The score line was 7 all after the completion of 8 ends, before the Borg team scored 5 shots on end 10 to be leading 12 -9. The Kings Meadows team then scored on the next 3 ends to win 13-12 and to go on to play Section 3 winner in the semi-finals. Luke Patterson (CP), Rob Claridge (Inv) and Scottsdale’s Craig Bennett played Cosgrove Park members, Shane Boden, Shane Wain & Peter Zoon in Rd 1 of Section 2. The Patterson rink was leading 10 to 4 before the Cosgrove Park side staged a comeback to fall 1 shot short of victory. In Section 2, Longford’s Jarrod Howard, Mark Strochnetter and Alan Gamble were 3 shots down against Andrew Appleyard’s rink of Anthony Bannon and Daniel Burke, before settling and winning 7 of the 8 ends remaining in the match to win 14 to 5.The Patterson rink in Rd 2 easily overcome their opponents to win their second game and go on to play the Howard combination to see who would win the section. Jarrod’s rink played the Cosgrove Park side in Rd 2 of sectional play. The Longford side was 3 shots down at the completion of end 4 against the Cosgrove Park rink consisting of Shane Boden, Shane Wain and Peter Zoon before the Longford side gained momentum and won 7 more ends to win the match 14-5. Luke Patterson, Rob Claridge and Craig Bennett scored 2 shots on the first end in the Rd 3 sectional play match against the Longford side who won the next 4 ends to be leading 7 -2 before the Patterson rink was able to add another 2 shots to their score and went on to win ends, 6,8,10 and 11 to be 3 shots down at the completion of Rd 3 sectional play which enable the Howard rink to win the section undefeated. In Section 3 the score-line for matches did not reflect the standard of bowls that was being played by the competitors in this section. Westbury’s Julian Frost, Anthony Bannon and Daniel Burke played the combination of Trevallyn’s Michael Sims and Lucas Howell alongside BA National Champion of Champions Singles winner Robert McMullen. The Howell combination played extremely well and won the first 4 ends to be leading the match 12 -1. Frosts team picked up 3 shots on end 9. The Howell team was too strong and won the match 14 – 7. Junior bowler Fletcher Felmingham teamed up with his father Craig and fellow Longford teammate Phillip Buchanan, winning 9 ends of the Rd 1 match against Chris Roach side, consisting of Scott Zeuschner and Gene Ayton to win the match 16 -3. And continued this form on in Rd 2 against Westbury side to win 14 – 9. Winning only 4 ends of the match by scoring multiple shots was enough for the Howell team to win their Rd 2 sectional play match against Chris Roach side 13 -11and go to play Felmingham side in Rd 3 to see who win the section and play in the semi-finals that was to be played at the completion of the sectional rounds. The Howell combination won the first four ends in the Rd 3 sectional match to be leading 8 – 0 before the Felmingham rink won the next 3 ends, before the Howell side won another 4 ends to go on to win the match and the section. Final score was 18-4.

Semi-final 1, saw Lucas Howell, Michael Sims and Robert McMullen playing some great conversion shots which enable them to be leading the game 16 – 1 after 8 ends of the 15-end semi-final match against Shane Gurr, Dennis Bassett, and Paul Elmer. The Kings Meadows team won the next 3 ends which included 5 shots on end 10 to have the score-line after 12 ends. Howell 17 to Gurr 10. Gurr’s rink won ends 13 & 14 to be 3 down on the score card with one end to be played. Michael Sims playing lead drew shot and held this shot at the completion of the 15 end to progress to the final of BN Open Men’s Triples. Semi-final 2 was a repeat of Section 3 last game of sectional play.
Jarrod Howard, Mark Strochnetter and Alan Gamble played Luke Patterson, Rob Claridge and Craig Bennett, who have already booked their place in 2022-23 BN Open Men’s Fours finals. After end 6 The Howard team was playing superably and was leading 11 to 1. The Paterson rink won 5 more ends but was not able to stop the momentum of the Howard rink, with Jarrod Howard displaying why he is one of the leading skips in Premier League.

BN OPEN WOMEN’S TRIPLES:

Seven teams entered this year’s Bowls North Open women’s triples, competing in sectional play at Kings Meadows bowls club alongside the Open Men’s and Minor triples events.

Maxine Monson (Brid), Judy Gurr (KM) and Westbury’s Denise Middap played the 21-22 BN Open Women’s Triples champions, Jessica McMullen (Inv), Emily Foster (Inv) and Chloe Flanagan (East) in the first-round match of section 1. The Monson team started well leading 8 to 4 after 6 ends and going on to win another 5 ends to the win the RD 1 encounter 17 -8. Kirsten Viney (Trev), Zoe Whelan (Inv) and Junior player Chloe Collins (Trev) played the composite side of Bev Huett (Wby), Julie Bannon (Wby) and Coralie Parsons (Long), only losing 3 ends in the match the Viney combination was triumph winning 14 -7. In Rd 2 in a low scoring game, The Huett team won 7 ends of the match to win by 1 shot. Final score Huett 10 – Monson 9. After 5 ends of the Rd 2 match, McMullen Vs Viney, the score line was 5 all, before the McMullen side settled and won of the last 7 ends winning the game 13 -6. With all teams sitting on 2 points at the completion of two rounds, anyone of the teams competing could have won Section 1 of the BN Open Women’s Triples. Jessica McMullen’s team play Bev Huett sides in Rd 3, with the scores locked at 5 all after 5 ends, the McMullen team picked up vital shots that enable them to win the closely contested game. Final scores McMullen 13 – Huett 11. In the final Rd 3 game of section 1, the Monson team played the Viney side. This was a remarkably close game, neither team could gain the upper hand in the match. At 6 ends the score line was 5 all. The Monson team scored on the next 4 ends to be leading 11-5 at 10 ends. The Viney team scored 4 shots on the next 2 ends but was not able to cut the shot difference back. Final score was Monson 10 to Viney 9. Section 1 winner was Maxine Monson, Judy Gurr & Denise Middap – 4 points + 10. With only 3 teams in Section 2. The Rd 1 winner would have a bye for RD 2. Trevallyn’s Fiona Cort, Lyn Ward and Amanda McElwee played Cosgrove Park side, Trudy Rundle, Vicki Winley and Maureen Zoon. The Cosgrove Park side was in control in the early stages of the match leading 7 -1 after 7 ends. The Trevallyn trio then won ends 8,9,10 to be 1 down on the score cards. The Cosgrove Park side scored 6 shots on the last 2 ends to win the game 13 to 6. Having the bye in the first round of Section 2, the Simpson rink, consisting of Jean Claridge (Inv) and Helen Pola (Scot), played the losing side from game 1 of section 2. Starting well Simpson rink after 6 ends was leading 8 -4 before the Trevallyn ladies staged a comeback and the score was level 9 all on end 10. The Simpson team won the 2 ends gaining 7 shots to win the match. Final score was 16 -9.

After winning the Rd 1 game, The Cosgrove Park side played the Simpson’s rink in Rd 3 of section 2 to see who would win the section and progress to the final. Cosgrove Park side scored on the first 3 ends to be leading 3 -0 before the Simpson team scored 4 shots on end 4. The Cosgrove Park team scored 5 shots on ends 7 and 8 to have a 4-shot lead at the completion of the 8th end. West Launceston side husband and wife duo Dean & Karen Draper alongside Carol Shea played the Kings Meadows team of Vicki Bassett Lyall Viney and Greg Smith in the Rd 1 game of Section 1. The score was 2 all after four ends, with the Smith side winning the next five ends to be leading 10 -2 at the completion of nine ends. The West Launceston trio scored on the last 3 ends and the final score was Smith 10 to Draper 5.

Wendy Page, Dennis Page & Isobella McLelland from Kings Meadows had the bye round in the first round of Section1 and went played the Draper side in Rd 2. Starting well, the Page team was leading 8 -0 after 4 ends before the West Launceston side picked up multiple shots on ends 5 & 6, the score line after 8 ends was Page 9 to Draper 5. Once again, the West Launceston side gained shots on the last 3 ends to full short of winning the match by 2 shots. Final score was Page 10 to Draper 8.
Round 3 of section 1 saw the clash of the Kings Meadows sides, to see who would progress to the Minor Triples final. Page’s side started well, picking up 3 shots on end 2 before winning 4 consecutive ends to be leading 9 – 2after 7 ends. Smith’s rink won ends 8 & 9 but was not able to stop the momentum of the Page team. Final score Page 11 to Smith 5.

Section 2 saw reigning BN Minor Triples champions, Michael Shingles, Doreen White alongside new teammate Betty Crooks play Janine Cashion (Cres), Narrinda Cawthen (Long) and Catherine Felmingham (Long) in Rd 1 of section 2.Winning 8 ends of the match and gaining multiple shots on ends 8 & 9, the Felmingham team proved too strong for the George Town Trio, at the completion of the 8th end, the Felmingham team was leading 11 -3 and only losing 1 more of the 12 end match, winning 14 -6.

Rd 2 of section 2 saw Invermay’s Jack Whelan team up with Cosgrove Park’s Shannon Hyland and Peter Whiteley to play the losing side from Rd 1. The Whiteley rink won the first 5 ends to be leading 11-0, before the George Town trio scored and staged a comeback. On end 11 the score line was Whiteley 14 to Shingles 8. The George Town Trio scored 5 on the last end and fell 1 shot short of winning the game. Final scores Whiteley 14 to Shingles 13. The Rd 3 game for section 2 was a low scoring game, scores was tied at 3 all after 6 ends between the Felmingham and Whiteley teams. Felmingham team scored on the next 2 ends to have a 6-shot lead at the 8 end of the match. Both teams won 2 ends each in the remaining ends of the match with the final score line was, Felmingham 12 to Whiteley 6. Janine Cashion, Narrinda Cawthen and Catherine Felmingham will play the team of Wendy Page, Isobella McLelland in the final of the BN North Minor Triples.

BOWLS NORTH OPEN MEN’S & WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP 22-23

Trevallyn Bowls Club was the host venue for the 22-23 BN Open Men’s & Women’s Fours Championship for 2022-23.

8 teams entered the 2022-23 Bowls North Open Women’s Fours championships competing in 2 sections with the section winners progressing to the final that is to be played on 19 March at the BN Finals Gala day.

At the completion of 2 rounds in section 1, The McMullen side consisting of Courtney Hobbs, Chloe Flanagan & Chloe Jongschaap were undefeated, and they played Cosgrove Park rink of Maureen Zoon, Vicki Winley, Carol Taylor & Trudy Rundle at the completion of the match, the Cosgrove Park side fell 1 shot short of wining the section, which enabled the McMullen team to progress to the final.

Section 2 winners were Rae Simpson, Jean Claridge, Helen Pola & Coralie Parsons. The Simpson team has previously won this event in 18-19, 19-20 and was runner up in 21-22 and is hoping to add this year’s title to their resume.

The Defending BN Open Men’s Champions played the composite side of Luke Patterson, Rob Claridge, Allan Ryman and Craig Bennett in the first semi-final. Scoreline was 5 all at the completion of the fifth end of the fifteen-end semi-final match. Patterson rink won ends 10 – 11 & 12 to be leading 15 -8, the Page rink won the next 3 ends but was unable to score the shots required to earn a place in the grand final. Final score was Patterson 15 to Page 8.

The semi-final was another a very tightly contested match between Mark Strochnetter’s rink of Chad Morrison, Oliver Morrison & Lachlan Strochnetter and the team from Cosgrove Park Shane Boden, Peter Zoon, Alan Sotheran & Wayne Foster. The Strochnetter team started well leading 7 -1 at 5 ends of the match before the Cosgrove Park side settled and won critical ends to be 1 up at 12 ends. The Longford team then scored 2 on the fourteenth end to have the score line 12 all going into the last end of the second semi-final. The Boden rink held one shot to win the match and proceed to finals and to take on the Patterson rink at the BN Finals Gala Day.

Westbury Bowls Club was the host club for this year’s Champion of Champions Singles event that was played on Sunday 20 March 2022 with 9 Club Champions competing in this years Men’s event and 8 in the Women’s event.  The winners will progress onto the Bowls Tasmania Champion of Champions State Final on 1st may 2022  against the other regions winners to see who will represent Tasmania at the Bowls Australia Champion of Champions event.

In the final of the 21-22 Key 2 Property BN Mixed Pairs there was several delays in play due to the inclement weather throughout the day.

North Launceston’s Teresa Turmine & Invermay’s Luke Patterson was leading 12 to 8 against Emily Foster from Invermay & Chris Roach from Longford Bowls Club after 9 ends and they adapted well to the tough slow greens at Kings Meadows.

Foster/Roach staged a comeback to have the score line 12 all after 11 ends with both teams playing some great shots throughout the match.

Unbelievably the score line was 14 all at the conclusion of 14 ends with Turmine/Patterson scoring 1 on the next end to leading 15 – 14 after 15 ends. Foster/Roach picked up 1 shot to have the scores all square with 2 ends to play. Turmine/Patterson won the 17 end to be 1 up going into the final end.

Luke trailed the kitty and was holding 4 shots before Emily sunk the jack into the ditch for 2 shots and claim her 3rd BN title for 2021-22 along with Chris added another title for 2021-22 after winning BN Fours earlier in the season.

After a big comeback staged by Josh Appleyard who was trialing 20 to 11. The game was tied 24 all, before Michael Sims was able to claim back to back Bowls North Men’s Open Singles Champion for 2021-22. This was the fourth BN Men’s Open Singles title won by Michael Sims, he had previously won this event in – 2014-15, 2016-17, 2020-21 and Runner up in 2019-20.

In a cracker of a game, Bridport’s Maxine Monson was vying to win her first Women’s Open Singles title, having 2020-21 title holder Rae Simpson 14 to 3. Before Rae staged a gallant comeback to have the scores locked at 24 all before Maxine Monson was able to score the the shot required to win the Bowls North Women’s Open Singles for 2021-22.

2019-20 runnerup in this event, Georgetown’s Michael Shingles played Heather Thompson from East Launceston in the Minor Singles Championship for 2021-22. In a very closely contested game between the Michael & Heather with only two shots the differenc in Michaels favour. He was able to score on three consecutive ends and was able to add the Minor Singles to the titles he has won in 2021-22.

The women’s novice final was contested between Longford’s Vicki Strochnetter and Cosgrove Park’s Trudy Rundle. The standout was the qualitly of bowls they played in the final, with both ladies showing skills beyond their experience.

MEN’S NOVICE

Mark Christenan from North Launceston progressed straight into the semi finals due to the withdrawal of Stephen Saltmarsh from Cressy Bowls Club due to illness, where he played Kings Meadows Robert Groenewegan. Robert started well picking up several mutiple shots to win a place in the BN Men’s Novice final for 2021-22.

In the other semi final Westbury’s Ducan Armstrong played Graham Tudor from Longford Bowls Club. In a close game to which either player could have secured themselves a berth in the final. Duncan claimed the vital shots he needed to win 21-16. In the final Robert Groenewegen started well to be leading 6 -2, before soring on 6 ends to  have the scoreline 17-5. Ducan was only able to score on one more end before Robert scored the shotes he needed to win th eBN Men’s Novice title for 2021-22.

The standard of bowls that was played by all the Juniors competing along with the sportmanship & commardie displayed was exceptional. In games throughout the sectional play of both disciplines, it came down to the last bowl of the match as to whom would win the game and the section.

Kane Walker’s rink lined up against reigning BN Fours champions from 20-21 to see who would win the title for 2021-22. In a tight fought match after 3 ends the scores were Roach 8 to Walker 3, which included an ‘8’ scored by the Roach rink on the second end of the match. On the eighth end the scores was Roach 14 to Walker 5. The Walker rink then won consecutive ends  to be only 4 shots down on the 13th end.  Roach picked up a handy 3 on the 15 end with the scoreline being Roach 18 to Walker 13. Roach’s rink played some magnificent shots to contain the Walker rink from only scoring 1 shot on the last 3 ends to become back to back BN Fours Champions for 2021-22. Because of the inclement weather, several of the Men’s, Women’s and Minor event was played in the indoor complex. The standard of play was exceptional with all games played in Round 1 of Section 1 being drawn games.

In a close contested final the youngs guns of Foster, Flanagan & McMullen were too strong for the Monson skipped rink scoring the shots they needed on the last end to win the title for 2021-22. Final score was Foster 16 def Monson 14.

MINOR TRIPLES:

With numbers well down for Minor events this year. 2 sections completed in the Minor Triples Championship for 2021-22. It was great to see several of BN junior players participating in this event and a side from St Helens Bowls Club.

This game was even throughout and spectators were in awe of the standard of bowls that was displayed by the finalists. The game was not decided until the last bowl was delivered on the 18th end with only 1 shot the difference. Either team could have won the title for 2021-22. BOWLS NORTH SINGLES & CHAMPION OF CHAMPION NOVICE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020-21

Bowls North Open Men, Women’s, Minor and Champion of Champion Novice Singles for 2020-21 were played on 14 & 28 March at Beauty Point & Kings Meadows Bowls Club. There were 34 entries received for Minor singles including 2 Junior players playing preliminary rounds at Beauty Point then transferring to Kings Meadows Bowls Club to play alongside Champion of Champion Novice singles & Open Men’s, Women’s finals.

With the competition down to the quarter final stages in the Minor singles, Midlands players Chad Morrison & Scott Crocker played with the score line – Morrison 20 to 7. Scott Crocker fought back to have to score line 23 to 22 before Chad scored the two shots, he required to proceed to the semi-final stage. Fellow club mates from Trevallyn Alex Cort & Chloe Collins played each other to see who would proceed to the Semi-finals. Alex started well to be leading 8 to 1 before Chloe settled to win 5 of the next 7 ends played in the match to have the score line Alex 12 to Chloe 7. Alex then picked up 4 shots then Chloe was able to score on the next consecutive 3 ends before Alex continued one to win the game 25 to 15. Lyn Cornelius from LBC played Stephen Hall from Invermay. Lyn held a handy lead in the early stages to be leading 7 to 1 before ‘Hoody’ was able to score. Lyn played beautifully throughout the match to go on and win the game 25 to 13 and a berth into the semi-final stage. Michael Shingles scored on 8 consecutive ends to be leading quite comfortably in his match against Anthony Bannon 18 to 4. Anthony won the next three ends, with the score line M Shingles 21 to 8 leading, Michael won the next 4 ends to win the game 25 to 8 and to go on and play Alex Cort in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals last year’s runner up in this event, Michael Shingles played Alex Cort and after 11 ends into the match the score line was 10 all, Alex then won the next 3 ends to be leading 16 to 10  and once again Michael gained the shots he needed in a great game of bowling to have the score line of 20 all and either players could have won this match, Alex then won the next 4 ends to gain a berth in the Minor Singles final. Final score was 25 to 20. In the other semi-final Lyn Cornelius played Chad Morrison, neither player could gain the upper hand in this match and after 5 ends the score line was Lyn 5 to Chad 4. Chad than settled to win 8 ends to be leading for the first time in this match 16 to 13. Lyn than scored a further 2 shots before Chad was able to score the shots, he needed to progress to the finals for the second year running and hopefully defend his title from 2019-20. Final score was C Morrison 25 to Lyn Cornelius 16. In the final Midlands defending Minor Singles Champion and Trevallyn’s Alex Cort played and their respective mentors of Scott Crocker and Ruby Walsh would be immensely proud of how the players performed during this match. Both players were drawing and playing conversion shots when required and after 21 ends played the score line was Alex Cort 21 to Chad Morrison 17. Alex then went on the win the remaining ends of the match and take out the Minor Singles Championship for 2020-21. Final score was Alex Cort 25 to Chad Morrison 18.

12 entries were received in this Open Women’s Singles championship for 2020-21. There were some great matches played in the first round and the score lines of these matches do not reflect the standard of bowls that was being played by the Ladies competing in this event.

In the semis finals Bowls Tasmania B Grade Women’s singles winner for 2020-21 Heather Thompson played Westbury’s Denise Middap. Denise won 6 consecutive ends to be leading 15 to 4 and proved to be too strong for Heather to go on and win the match and a berth in this year’s final. Final scores D Middap 25 def H Thompson 14.

In the other semi-final Kings Meadows Rae Simpson played Invermay’s Maureen Zoon and in a very tight scoring match after 26 ends played the score line was 20 to 19 in Rae’s favour. Rae than score the shots she needed to proceed into the final for 2020-21. Final Score was R Simpson 25 to M Zoon 20.

In the final regaining Bowls Tasmania Open Women’s Singles champion for 2020-21 played Westbury’s Denise Middap. Rae was leading 11 to 5 in a remarkably close game that consistent of tight heads and consistent bowling by both players. Denise scored on the next 5 ends to be only 1 down on the score card. Score was Rae 13 to Denise 12. Rae scored on the next 4 ends in the match to be 3 shots ahead, throughout the match there was only 2 ends where multiple shots was scored. Rae then gained the shots she required to claim her second singles title for 2020-21 season in a cracker of a game against Denise. Final score was Rae Simpson 25 to Denise Middap 17.

With only 15 entries for this year’s BN Open Men’s singles Championship any player could have been crowned champion for 2020-21 season.

With the competition down to the quarter final stages, some remarkably close games played that either player could have won. Longford’s Joey Thomas played Trevallyn’s Josh Walker Davis in a close match and after 15 ends played the score line was 15 to 14 in Josh Walker Davis favour and at 29 ends the score was 24 to 23. Josh was able to score the shot required to progress to the semi-finals. Final score J Walker Davis 25 to J Thomas 24. Longford’s Mark Strochnetter played Invermay’s Gene Ayton and Mark with a run of scoring shots on multiple ends, Mark held a commanding lead at 11 ends played the score line was M Strochnetter 11 to G Ayton 5. Mark won a further 11 ends to Gene’s 5 to go on and win the match 25 to 13. Longford’s Scott Zeuchner played Michael Sims from Trevallyn. Scott started well to be leading 7 to 4 before Michael scored on 4 ends which included multiple shots to take the lead 13 to 7. In a tight tussle Michael Sims continued onto win the game 25 to 18. ‘Swampies’ Chris Lee played LBC Rob Antel and at 12 ends into the match Rob lead 13 to 6 and after scoring on 3 more ends was in command of the game leading 17 to 8 before Chris won 9 consecutive ends to come from behind and win the match 25 to 17.

In the semi-finals Michael Sims played Chris Lee. Michael held at 5 to 3 lead and went on to win the next 4 ends to be leading 12 to 3 before Chris scored on the next 2 before Michael scored on 6 ends of the remainder of the match to win a place in the final. Final score was M Sims 25 to C Lee 12. In the other semi-final in another close game Mark Strochnetter and Josh Walker Davis played a thriller with neither player unable to gain the upper hand and the players should their skilled at draw bowling. Final score M Strochnetter 25 def J Walker Davis 21.

In the final Bowls North President Greg Smith had the pleasure of marking this game and the game was lived streamed by Shane Gurr. With only 2 shots the difference on the score line throughout the match, spectators could see why these two players are Bowls North & Bowls Tasmania representative players. After playing 26 ends Michael Sims scored the shots required to take out the title, for which he was runner up in last year for 2020-21. Final score was Michael sims 25 to Mark Strochnetter 23

In this year’s Champion of Champion’s Men’s & Women’s Novice 7 men & 5 Ladies competed in this event and the talent that is coming through the ranks is a promising for the game of bowls.

In the semi-final Collin Burns played Paul Elmer with the score line 9 all at 10 ends and throughout the match the score difference always was only 2 shots the difference.  Until the 24 end of the match the score was 19 to16 in Collin’s favour. Then Collin was able to score 3 shots on the next 2 ends to win the match. Final score C Burns 21 to P Elmer 16. Brodie Howard held an 8 to 1 lead in his game against Lilydale’s Michael McMasters. Michael then scored on the next 3 ends to have the score line B Howard 12 to M McMasters 7. The Brodie scored on the next 6 ends to claim the match 21 to 7.

In the Ladies Novice event for 2020-21, 5 eager ladies from Invermay, West Launceston, Launceston, Georgetown & Cressy competed for the title.

Terese won 12 ends of the match to Chloe’s 5 and most ends only 1 shot was scored by the players and the score line does not reflect on how the players played in this game.

With the competition now down to the semi-final stage great friends Terese Dick and Launceston’s Janice Newett played each other and the sportsmanship and encouragement to each other shown by each player throughout the match was extraordinary. Final score T Dick 21 def J Newett 3

In the second semi of the Women’s novice event Georgetown Pat Wilkinson played Cressy’s Skye Bannon. After 5ends played the score line was 3 all. Skye won 5 of the next 6 ends played to be leading 12 to 5. Skye then won 6 ends to Pat’s 3 to progress to the final. Final score was S Bannon 21 def P Wilkinson 10.

The finalists in this year’s women’s novice event were West Launceston Terese Dick and Cressy’s Skye Bannon, after 5 ends that was played Terese lead 7 to 2 and on several ends, Terese drew the absolute shot to win many ends. Terese continued to take out the title for 2020-21. Final score was T Dick 21 def S Bannon 10.

The only remaining Bowls North Championship event to be played for 2020-21 is the Open Champion of Champions Men’s and Women’s singles, which is scheduled to be played on April 24, 2021. Entries close at 12 (Noon) Wednesday 19 April 2021.

Trevallyn duo of Geoffrey Buchanan and Lynn Dyer was triumph in the 2020-21 Champion of Champions Veterans Singles held at Cressy Bowls Club on Wednesday 17 of March 2021 with great bowling displayed by all who have competed in this BN Championship event. It was great to see the Women’s Veteran singles being played this year, as this event was cancelled last season due to lack of entries.

Jillian them score 9 shots on the next 7 ends of the match to be leading 11 to 10. Lyn then won six ends including 2 ends of 3 shots to win the game 21 to 13.

In the Men’s final neither player could gain the upper hand in this match with the score line being 6 all after 8 ends played.  Geoffrey scored 7 shots on the next 3 ends to be leading 12 to 7, before David scored another shot. Geoffrey than won the next 5 ends which included 2 ends of multiple shots to win the title for the 2020-21 season.

Open final was contested by husband-and-wife duo of Jessica & Robert McMullen who lined up against Invermay’s Kim Saunders and Aaron Page from Kings Meadows. Kim & Aaron started well leading by 3 shots after 2 ends before the McMullen duo scored. After 8 ends the score line was 7 all and neither team were able to gain the upper hand. The McMullen duo then clicked into gear and jumped out to a 15 to 9 lead with one end remaining. Saunders/Page managed a single on the last end for a final score of 15 to 10 in McMullen’s favour.

Following a decorated career with many Bowls South titles, this was the first Bowls North title for Robert McMullen.

In the Minor final the Cressy duo of Julie & Anthony Bannon played Invermay’s father and daughter combo of Jamie & novice player Zoe Whelan. The Bannon duo started well to be leading 7 to nil after 3 ends before Jamie & Zoe scored on the next 2 ends to be only 3 shots behind on the score card. Julie & Anthony then won the next 6 ends with included several multiple scores to be well ahead in the game and claim the title for 2020-21, 21 to 6.

The final was down to last years runner up Rae Simpson and Sophie Fletcher. Rae held an early lead after 8 ends into the final leading 13 to 4 before Sophie scored on the next seven ends to be leading by three. Rae picked up four shots on the next end to be leading by one 18-17. Sophie than scored on the next five ends to win the DL Reid Singles for 2020-21, twenty years exactly since Sophie won this event before.

Trevallyn father and son duo – Josh and Andrew Appleyard played the Cressy duo of Les Dykstra and Allan Ryman and defending 2019-20 champions Josh Walker-Davis & Dennis Bassett took on East Launceston’s David Minns and Kayden Munro from Cosgrove Park in the semi-final stages of the competition to see who would progress to the final.

MEN’S SEMI FINAL RESULTS:

Appleyard/Appleyard defeated Dykstra/Ryman.

Bassett/Walker-Davis defeated Minns/Munro.

The Men’s Open final could have been won by either team competing with father & son duo of Josh and Andrew Appleyard playing several important conversion shots to enable them to take out the title for 2020-21.

WOMEN’S SEMI FINAL RESULTS:

Saunders/Lee defeated Fletcher/McGrath.

Zoon/Healey defeated Thompson/Viney.

Next best qualifier Westbury’s Sophie Fletcher teamed up with North Launceston’s Claire McGrath played Invermay’s Kim Saunders & Debra Lee. Both teams played superably but it was Kim Saunders and Debra Lee progressing to the final.

East Launceston’s Heather Thompson and Kirsten Viney took on Invermay’s Maureen Zoon and Billie Healey in the other semi-final. The match was very even in the early ends before Zoon/Healey scored multiple shots to progress to the final and take on fellow teammates from Invermay.

It was all Invermay final in the Women’s Open section with the leads (Lee & Healey) playing well and setting up the head for their perspective skips. Scores was tight in the early ends of the match before Saunders/Lee won several consecutive ends to take out the title for 2021-21.

MINOR SECTION:

Sectional play for the Minor Pairs Championship was held at North Launceston Bowls Club with the finals moving to Invermay Bowls Club. In the quarter final of the Minor pairs Invermay teamamtes Clinton Daines & Phillip Dean played the Cressy duo of Julie & Anthony Bannon. Daines/Dean started well grabbing an early lead and continuing to the semi-final stage.

In the first semi final Midlands Aaron Milner & Les Fisher played Clinton Daines & Phillip Dean. Milner/Fisher gained the upper hand in the latter stages of the game to progress to the finals.

Midlands Junior player, Oliver Morrison & Scott Crocker played North Launceston’s Eric Burch & Michael Elliott.

Elliott/Burch was unable to stop the momentum of Morrison/Crocker who have won already won 2 of the minor titles this season and Morrison/Crocker progressed into the finals.

In the final the Midlands teammates played each other to see who would take the title out this season. Oliver Morrison lead beautifully in the finals, with great guidance from his skip Scott Crocker they won the inter club battle to take out the title for 2020-21.

Bowls North Mixed Pairs Championship 2020-21

Sectional play was held on Sunday 7 February, 2021 with the Open sections playing at Kings Meadows and Minor sections at North Launceston. 25 teams competed in the Open section along with 15 in the Minor section of this Championship event.

BOWLS NORTH PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP 2020/21

Bowls North Open Men’s, Women’s & Minor Pairs Championship for 2020-21, sectional play was played on Sunday 24 January with 12 Open Men’s teams, 12 Open Women’s teams competing at Invermay Bowls Club and 17 Minor teams took to the greens at North Launceston Bowls Club.

All players adapted to the heat and fast flowing greens quickly and the standard of bowls that was played was exceptional to watch.

It was a great sight at the Minor Pairs Championships to see 7 of our up-and-coming Junior players competing in this event this year.

BOWLS NORTH JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020-21

Bowls North Junior Championships for 2020-21 was held on the 6 to 8 of January on the fast flowing greens at North Launceston Bowls Club, with 14 Junior Bowlers competing in Triples, Pairs & Singles over the three days.

The standard of bowls that was played by the Junior bowlers was outstanding and the sportsmanship and camaraderie displayed by the Juniors throughout the championships was exceptional.

This event was the last Junior Competition for Isabella Hopkins from Launceston Bowls Club, who has just turned 18.

Bowls North would like to thank all concerned who contributed to the success of the Junior Championships for 2020-21, Parents, North Launceston Bowls Club, Markers and Umpires.

BOWLS NORTH TRIPLES CHAMPIONSHIP 2020-21

Bowls North 2020-21 Triples Championship was played on Sunday 6 December at Trevallyn Bowls Club with 27 teams entered across the three divisions (Open Men-Women’s-Minor). Due to the number of entries and under BN Conditions of Play this year’s Triples championship was reverted to a knockout competition.

With the competition now down to the final two competitors, 2019-20 BN Triples defending champions David Heron, Sean Alderson, Graeme Hemingway played Chris Roach, Joey Thomas, Mark Strochnetter to see who would win the title in 2020-21.

Hemmingway side started well winning the first two ends before Roach’s team was able to score and then Roach’s side continue to gain momentum to win the next six ends before Hemingway side was able to score again. Roach’s side then won the next eight ends including several multiple scores to take out the title for 2020-21. Final score was 20-4.

Last year’s runner up in this event, Maggie Campbell, Jean Claridge, Rae Simpson took on the team of Bev Huet, Vicki Winley, Denise Middap in this year’s Open Women’s final.

Simpson’s rink picked up multiple shots on end three and four to be leading 5 to 2 before Huett’s team scored three shots to have the scores 5 all after five ends. Once again after seven ends the score line was 6 all and the game could have been won by either side, with neither side able to gain the upper hand at twelve ends the score was 9 to 8, then Simpson’s rinks picked up 5 shoots on the next two ends to take out the title for 2020-21. Final score was Simpson 14 to Huett 10.

Ten teams competed in the minor section of this year’s Triples Championship including three novice players from Invermay, Zoe Whelan, Nicole Dean and Chloe Jongschaap. Bowls North would like to thank the team from Midlands – Chad Morrison, Oliver Morrison and Scott Crocker for the unbelievable sportsmanship shown to the three novices throughout the game.

In the final of the Minor section, it was the battle of the country clubs to see who would win the title this year. Cressy’s Anthony Bannon, Julie Bannon and Shannon Hyland started well to have the score line 6 to 1 after five ends before the Midlands side of Chad Morrison, Oliver Morrison, and Scott Crocker scored seventeen shots on the next six ends to be leading 17 to 6 after eleven ends before the Cressy side was able to score two shots. The Midlands team then score another seven shots on the next two ends to be leading 24 to 9 and go onto to win the title for 2020-21. Final scores Morrison 24 to Bannon 10.

BOWLS NORTH MEN & WOMEN’S OVER 60’S PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP 2020-21

Men’s and Women’s Over 60’s pairs was introduced his season (2020-21) with 12 Women’s teams and 20 Men’s teams competing on the fast-flowing greens at North Launceston and Kings Meadows hoping to be successful in this event.

In several sections, it came down to who won the last round of sectional play to see who would progress to the finals at North Launceston on Wednesday 18th November.

In the first semi-final Barbara Smith and Madge Strochnetter took on Maxine Viney and Sherill Watts scores was even at end 5, with Viney/Watts scoring on the next 6 ends to have the score 7 all before Smith/Strochnetter scored on 5 of the next 6 ends to win game 13 to 10. Invermay’s Kim Saunders and Debbie Lee came out of the blocks to win 9 ends before Launceston’s Jennifer Barnett and Lyn Cornelius was able to score. Final score was Saunders/Lee 24 to 5. In the final spectators where a witness to some great draw bowling by the players and at 9 ends the score line was Smith/Strochnetter 9 to Saunders/Lee 6. The game could have been won by either team before Smith/Strochnetter scored 7 shots on three ends to be leading 16 to 9 and take out the title for 2020-21.

Final score was Smith/Strochnetter 17 defeated Saunders/Lee 9.

Trevallyn’s Roger Long and Adrian Coomber played Kings Meadows team mates of Desmond Cook and Robert Morcom in the quarter finals, with Coomber/Long winning through to semi-finals 24 to 6 to take on Peter Barrett and Don Campbell to see who would play in the final. Barrett/Campbell proved to strong and progressed into the finals defeating Coomber /Long 17 to10. In the other semi final Kings Meadows duo of Allan Legg and Garry Elmer played the Launceston duo of Graeme Barnett and Robert Booth. The match was even until the Kings Meadows pair skipped away to earn a place into the final winning 14 to 7.

In the final Peter Barrett and Don Campbell proved too strong for Allan Legg and Garry Elmer gaining an early lead and the Legg/Elmer combination was unable to stop the momentum of Barrett/Campbell.

Final scores were Barrett/Campbell 22 to Legg/Elmer 5
