Rd 2 OVER 60S WOMEN’S STATEWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT. By Madge Strochnetter -BN Ladies Bowls Director.

We are back at the North Launceston Bowls Club on a day that started out overcast, but then it came out quite warm as the day went on. The morning round saw our players facing up against the state team. They were all good matches for the spectators to watch, but the state players began exerting their authority from the outset.

The team of Wendy Smith, Lyn Cornelius, Di Byard and led by Maggie Campbell got off to a reasonable start, making their opponents work hard for their shots. The first 6 ends were close but then the Jeanette Lane team hit their straps and broke away to a 7 shot victory. A great effort by our ladies.

The team of Lisa Coppe, Janet McCarthy, Patricia Freeman and led by Maxine Monson had a very tight game, keeping up with their opponents for the first 13 ends, then the Lyn Triffitt team gained a slight lead to get up with a 5 shot win, well done ladies on an exciting game to watch.

The team of Carol Taylor, Maxine Viney, Sue Ross and led by Barb Smith started off well, they kept it up to their opponents for the first 10 ends, but unfortunately for them, the experienced team led by Kim Saunders, took control to finish with an 11-shot win.  All 3 games were good to watch with a great exhibition of bowling on show.

Lunch was much appreciated by all, Maree and her team putting on a fine meal as always.  After lunch, it was back to business, with our players up against the North West Coast.

Maggie Campbell’s team got off to a flying start, leading by 10 shots after 8 ends. The team kept the pressure on for the entire 18 ends, finally coming out with a well earned 10 shots victory.

Maxine Monson’s team found themselves in a tight battle. The coastal team gained the upper hand by end 7, leading by 6 shots, but our team never gave up and pulled it back to a 2 shot advantage by end 14, the final 4 ends were neck and neck with a draw being the final result. A great tussle.

Barb Smith’s team had a struggle all the way through the entire 18 ends, with the opposition keeping on the pressure, not allowing our ladies to keep hold of their shots when they had them. Our ladies kept trying but the coasters were too strong.

Final scores:
M.Campbell      22   def     H.Sturzaker   12

Overall, it was a see-sawing type of day as far as results go, but our ladies were determined to get as many points as they could. BN would like to thank N.L.B.C. for the use of their clubhouse, the kitchen staff, bar staff, master boards turners, umpires and all the volunteers who helped. Also, the Green staff for presenting us with great greens to play on.
