OPEN WOMEN’S SWC REPORT

2023-24 WOMEN’S OPEN STATEWIDE CHALLENGE – Round 1.  3DECEMEBR 2023

By BN Ladies Bowls Director, Madge Strochnetter.

A pleasant day greeted all the players at North Launceston Bowls Club today.

With the greens running nicely, we knew we were in for a great day of bowls, and we weren’t disappointed.

In the morning round, the Northern team played the N.W team.

The rink of Sophie Fletcher, Lyn Cornelius, Teresa Turmine and led by Heather Thompson got off to a strong start, taking control from the first bowl, with all 4 players teaming up well together. They only allowed their opponents, led by D.Harman, to score 10 shots to their 26 shots, finishing with a well-earned 16 shot win.

The rink of Satya Springer, Julie Bannon, Debbie Maher and led by Bev Huett had a very tight game with our ladies having bowls in the head consistently, then the NW team, led by A.Bickley, put together 4 terrific final ends to get up  over our ladies.  Despite the deficit, these ladies bowled well.

The rink of Denise Middap, Wendy Smith, Helen Pola and led by Jean Claridge also had a close contest. The NW team, led by A.Wooley, started off strong but our ladies gradually closed the gap to within 2 shots , but the opposition crawled back to get up by 4 in the finish. 15-19

Then we went in for lunch. Many thanks to Maree Peck and her team for a very nice and enjoyable lunch, which was much appreciated by all players and officials.  The afternoon round saw us up against the Southern team.

Bev Huett’s team put their foot on the pedal from the first end, playing steady bowls, only letting their opponents, led by C.Brooks, get the occasional score, finishing with a 10 shot win.

Jean Claridge’s team found themselves in a tussle against the team led by T.Munro, but they kept their concentration firm and held on to get up by 3 shots.

Heather Thompson’s team had a hard game against D.Tanner’s team, but our ladies held their nerve to finally get up by 1 shot. A great effort.

What a great day of bowling we were treated to by our ladies. They certainly did themselves and us proud. All Northern Tasmanian bowlers should be very pleased with these ladies, and also our men, as they had a good successful day as well.

On behalf of BN and all players, I would like to say thank you to North Launceston Bowls Club for the use of their magnificent greens and clubhouse.

Thank you to the umpires, the Greenkeeper’s, the Bar staff, the kitchen staff, the Master Board operators and all the volunteers.
