OPEN WOMEN’S STATEWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT Rd 2 – 28-1-2024 By Madge Strochnetter – BN Ladies Bowls Director.
This round of the Statewide challenge series was held at the Burnie Bowls Club on a very windy day, just like it was here in the North on Saturday. Temperature was around 20 degrees, which would have made it pleasant to play in, however the gusty conditions even gave the jack a bias a lot of times while it was getting rolled, very trying indeed.
The morning game saw Bowls North play against the Bowls Tasmania State team.
The team of Lyn Cornelius, Helen Pola, Teresa Turmine and led by Heather Thompson found themselves playing catch-up from end 1 with the Tasmanian team never letting up. Even in these conditions, they played well and were just too good for us, getting up by 10 shots.
The team of Denise Middap, Wendy Smith, Jean Claridge and led by Margaret Williams had a tight battle for the first 6 ends, then their opponents put their foot down to manage a 10 shot win, however our ladies were still pushing hard, getting 4 shots on the final end.
The team of Di Byard, Julie Bannon, Debbie Maher and led by Bev Huett were holding their own for the first 9 ends, but then the Tasmanian team lifted their game to the next level, not letting the Bowls North team keep hold of their shots, getting up with an 18 shot win.

The Burnie Bowls Club provided us all with a delicious 2 course lunch which was much appreciated by everyone.
The afternoon session was against Northwest which saw some very interesting games unfolding.
H.Thompson’s rink took control of the game from the beginning, winning 6 ends in a row before the coast team were able to score an end. The northerners then ran away with a fine bowling performance before the NW team attempted a comeback, closing the gap a little, but our ladies maintained their composure to get up by 6 shots.
M.Williams rink started out with a tight battle, but then our team restricted them from scoring for the next 7 ends straight before the NW team tried to pull it back, but the BN team held on for a 5 shot victory. A good fight.
B.Huett’s team had a change of player prior to the game starting, due to Debbie Maher succumbing to an injury, therefore Sophie Fletcher took her place in the team. This proved to be a close encounter for the first half of the game, but then the coastal team pulled the trigger and took control, gaining the momentum to come out the victors 10 shots. A good effort by our ladies.
