BOWLS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Bowls North 2022-23 Junior Championships was played on the 4 & 5 of January 2023 at Kings Meadows Bowls Club, with 15 BN Juniors competing at the 2-day event.

The Bowls North Junior squad has been attending training sessions and the skills and knowledge they have gained from the training sessions showed throughout the championship series, with two novice players from Invermay, Nakia Daines & Jorja Jongschaap competing in their first BN Junior Championships and two senior members Jack Watson & Peter Daines competing in their last Junior Championship series. The sportsmanship and camaraderie displayed by all the Junior players was exceptional.

The score line throughout all matches played, did not reflect on the closeness of matches and the standard play by the Junior’s competing.

In post sectional play of the singles, section 1 winner played section 4 and section 2 winner played section 3 winner. Section 1 winner Peter Daines played Longford’s Hayden Strochnetter. Winning the first 4 ends, Hayden was leading 4 to 0, before Peter won the next 4 ends to have the score line 5-4. Winning the next two ends the score line changed once again to have Hayden leading 6 to 5. Peter picked up 7 shots on the next 3 ends to have a 5 shot lead. Hayden won 3 consecutive ends to be 1 shot behind on the score card. Invermay’s Peter Daines won a further 5 ends to win the match 18 -13.

Trevallyn’s Junior member, Chloe Collins played Lachlan Strochnetter in the second semi-final. Lachlan was leading 8 to 2 at the completion of end 7 in the race to 18 shots that was required to win the match and a place in the final of BN Junior Singles final. Chloe won 4 vital ends to have the score line 10 all. Lachlan won the next two ends to have a four-shot lead with Chloe winning the next two ends to once again have the score tied at 14 all. Lachlan won 3 more ends to go and book a place in the BN Junior Singles Championship final. Final scores L Strochnetter 18 def C Collins 14.

In a tightly contest match, with a great standard of bowls being played by the finalists in the 2022-23 BN Junior Singles match between Longford’s Lachlan Strochnetter & Invermay’s Peter Daines, thrilled the spectators watching, with the conversion and draw shots that played by the young Junior bowlers where playing. At the completion of 6 ends, Peter Daines was leading 6 to 3. Peter won the next two ends to hold a 6-shot lead after 9 ends, the score was P Daines 10 to L Strochnetter 4. Lachlan then took control of the match playing shorter ends and he won 7 consecutive ends to be leading 17 to 10 and only requiring 1 shot to win the BN Junior Singles Title for 2022-23. Peter fought back and won the next 2 ends and was only 3 shots behind. Lachlan played a superb lead bowl, in what was to be the final end of the match, to gain the 1 shot he required to win the Junior Singles title. Final scores L Strochnetter 18 def P Daines 14.

BN JUNIOR PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

7 teams competed in sectional play in the 2022-23 BN Junior Pairs Championship, playing 3 games of 12 ends with the section winners progressing to the final.

Defending BN Junior Pairs Champions Henry Hollingsworth & Oliver Morrison was aiming to defend the title they have won for the past 3 consecutive years, and they won all 3 games in sectional play to defend their title for 2022-23. Section 2 winner was not decided until Rd 3 game between Collins/Strochnetter and the Blake & James Jones with the Collins/Strochnetter winning by 4 shots and progressing to the final. The score line in games played does not reflect the standard of bowls that was being played.

Trevallyn’s Chloe Collins and Longford’s Hayden Strochnetter started well in the 18 end BN Junior Pairs final leading 10 to 2 after 7 ends. Once gaining control of the mat, Hollingsworth/Morrison change the length that was being played and gained 18 shots on 7 consecutive ends to win them their third BN Junior Pairs Championship and Oliver’s 4^th pairs championship, having previously winning this event with his brother Bayley in 2019/20 season.

BOWLS TASMANIA JUNIOR STATEWIDE CHALLENGE SERIES Rd 3

Bowls North Junior Statewide Challenge side competed in Rd 3 of Bowls Tasmania Junior Statewide Challenge Series at Longford Bowls Club on Sunday 26 February 2023 with two of the BN Junior Squad, Peter Daines and Jack Watson playing their final game in the Junior Statewide Challenge Series.

Due to the overnight rain, this round was played on the synthetic surface at Longford with the Bowls North Junior players adapting well to the change of surface.

At completion of Rd 2 the overall points tally for the 2022-23 Junior Statewide Series was –

In the morning session the BN Junior side started well winning all games that was played in the pairs & triples disciplines and gained valuable points for Bowls North in the overall tally.

With only 1 point difference in the overall points tally at the completion of the morning games, the BN Juniors needed to win all of the afternoon games in the disciplines of fours and singles to claim the overall trophy for BT Junior Statewide Series.

The camaraderie displayed by the BN Juniors in the afternoon session was outstanding and the scoreline from games did not reflect the standard that was being played by the Juniors. Unfortuntely the BN Juniors was not able to gain the points required in respect to the overall tally.

Bowls North Juniors participated in Rd 2 of Bowls Tasmania Junior Statewide Challenge Series held at Longford Bowls Club on Sunday 8 January 2023.

All BN Junior members continued with the enthusiasm and form that they had shown at the BN Junior Championships and sectional play for BT State Junior Pairs events for 2022-23 that they had recently played in, gaining valuable points to be sitting second place on the Overall Junior SWC ladder.

Round 2 of the Bowls Tasmania Junior Statewide Challenge Series was played on Sunday 9th January 2022 at Burnie Bowls Club. Due to the inclement weather the games was played in the indoor complex.

BN Juniors continued on with the great form that they all displayed earlier on the week at BN Junior Championships and the scoreline from some games did not reflect the standard of bowls that was played by all the BN Juniors participating in this event.

This round saw Hayden Strochnetter from Longford Bowls Club playing his first representative game for Bowls North in the Bowls Tasmania Junior SWC Series.
