BOWLS NORTH – CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT

BOWLS NORTH FOURS CHAMPIONSHIP 2019-20

MEN’S OPEN FOURS CHAMPIONSHIP

12 teams contested this season Open Men’s Fours Championship which was held at Kings Meadows Bowls Club. After some fierce and tight games during the sectional rounds, the section winners were –

Section 1:  Ayton, Munro, Lee, Patterson – 6 points + 33

Section 2:  Sims, Gamble, Sims, Walker Davis – 6 points + 13

Section 3:  Roach, Thomas, Baker, Jackson – 6 points + 17

NBQF:  Boutcher, Springer, Gurr, Minns – 4 points +21

In the semi- finals defending champion team of Jackson, Baker, Roach & Thomas faced up against the team from Invermay and substitute player for Chris Lee in this match, Robert McMullen. Ayton’s rink started on fire scoring a five on the first end, going on to win nine ends of the match to defeat the defending champions, 16 to 8. In the other semi, Minns team played Trevallyn/Longford combination which was skipped by Josh Walker Davis. The game was even up until the 6-end mark when Walker Davis rink scored multiples on the next six ends to win a place in the final by defeating the Minns rink 17-8.

In the final the Walker Davis rink where on fire scoring multiples on the first four ends, then Ayton’s rink lifted. From the eighth end to the seventeenth, Ayton’s team won six ends to Walker Davis three. The scores on the seventeenth end were Ayton 19 to 20 to Walker Davis. Ayton team needed one to push the game into an extra end or two for the win. With a tight measure the Walker Davis rink scored one to take the title for 2019-20.

WOMEN’S OPEN FOURS CHAMPIONSHIP

This year there were 10 women’s teams entered in the Women’s Open Four’s championship. The competition had 3 sections and therefore the NBQF would go through to the semi-finals. With defending champions, Simpson, Claridge, Pola, & Parsons in section 1 winning all their games. Sophie Fletcher teamed up with three Juniors, Logyn Curtis, Chloe Collins & Billie Healey to narrowly miss out on winning their section. Section 2 there was some tight games with Maureen Zoon’s team taking out the section.

The section winners were –

Section 1: Simpson, Claridge, Pola, Parsons – 6 point + 23

Section 2: Zoon, Thompson, Viney, Zoon – 6 points + 5

Section 3: Monson, Gurr, Strochnetter, Jones – 6 points + 11

NBQF: Fletcher, Curtis, Healey, Collins – 4 points + 26

In semi-final 1 Sophie Fletcher team played Maureen Zoon’s team. On the fifth end the score was 5 to 4. Zoon’s rink won five more ends including four shots on end seven to win the game 14 to1 1.

Semi-final 2 Monson Vs Simpson, Maxine scored an five on end two, Simpson’s team won the next six ends to have a 13 to 5 lead at end eight, Monson rink only scored on three ends which was not enough

The final was now down to Simpson Vs Zoon. Only two ends of two shots was scored with each team only able to score 1 shot when they won the ends. Rae Simpson team won ten ends to win the

match and become back to back Bowls North Open Women’s champions. Score was Simpson 12 to Zoon 8. The score does not reflect the great standard of bowls that was played by both sides.

MINOR FOURS

This year Bowls North has introduced the award for the Minor Bowler of the year, to try and encourage B grade bowlers to enter Bowls North Minor Championship events. Six entries were received for the Minor Fours competition this year. With two sections in the competition the team that won each section progressed through to the final.

Section Winners:

Section 1: Bishop, Singh, Arnol, G Smith – 6 points + 23

Section 2: Morrison, O Morrison, McCarthy, A Smith – 6 points +24

The final was contested between the North Launceston and Midlands rinks. The game was evenly matched at five ends with the score being Midlands 4 to North Launceston 3. Then the Midlands team won eight of the remaining ends left to outscore the North side 14 to 10.

It was a pleasure to watch two of the Bowls North upcoming Juniors win their first championship, with Bayley McCarthy & Oliver Morrison both playing well throughout the whole championship event.
