BN CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS MEN’S & WOMEN’S SINGLES 2019-20

This year’s event was held at Kings Meadows Bowls Club on February 9th, 2020, with 5 Men’s Northern Club Champions and 8 Ladies’ competing in the event this year.

The winner of this event goes on to represent Bowls North in the Bowls Tasmania Sate final, then the State winner will represent Tasmania in the Bowls Australia National Event which is scheduled to be held in October 2020.

In the Men’s event Trevallyn Josh Walker Davis played Kings Meadows Robert McMullen. Robert started strongly leading 5-0 before Walker Davis was able to score. Each player than went on to win 3 consecutive ends each with Robert McMullen continuing to win the game 21 to 13.

North Launceston’s Warren Shaw played Longford’s entry, Matty Jackson in the next round. Matty picked up and 3 and 2 on end 2 and 3, then Warren Shaw was able to score on the next 5 ends to lead 12 to 5 Matty Jackson then score multiple shots on 6 consecutive ends to take the lead 19 to 18. Warren Shaw then won the next 2 ends to win the game 21 to 19 and proceed into the final.

Andrew Appleyard took on Robert McMullen. This game was very close, with each player only to score 1 when they won ends. Andrew Appleyard then scored on 7 consecutive ends to skip away and take victory 21 to 16.

The final was then played between North Launceston Warren Shaw and Cosgrove Park Andrew Appleyard. Warren skipped away to an early led 11 to 5 before Andrew settled to win the next 7 ends including several multiple shots to go on to win the 2019-20 Bowls North Champion of Champions Men’s Singles.

The first game in the Women’s event was between Longford entrant Bille Bognar and Jean Claridge from Scottsdale. Billie Bognar started brilliantly and after 11 ends was leading 15 to 8, before Jean was able to settle, winning the next ten ends to win the game 21 to 20.

Kings Meadows Maggie Campbell took on Launceston player, Wendy Philips. Maggie played well and was leading 7 to 2. Wendy was only able to win 6 ends, before Maggie picked up 2 multiple scores of 4 and went onto win the game 21 to 12.

Invermay’s Bec Van Asch played Cosgrove Park Molly Howell. Bec took the lead early n this game leading 8 to 2 before Molly scored on consecutive ends, the score line was at 10 all. Molly scored on the next to be in front for the first time of this match. Bec then won the next 6 ends t go on the win the game 21 to 11.

Trevallyn’s Wendy Hodgetts started well against North Launceston player, Teresa Turmine. Wendy won 13 ends of the game to Teresa’s 7. Wendy then went onto win the game 21 to 13.

Wendy then took on Invermay’s Bec Van Asch. Bec consistently scored on several ends to quickly go out to 13 to 7 lead. Wendy won the next 2 ends, then Bec scored on the next 4 ends to o on and win the game 21 to 11.

Jean Claridge took on Maggie Campbell. Jean started this game well and quickly moved to a 10 to 5 lead, with Maggie scoring on the next three ends to have the scores 12 to 8, at this stage the game could have been won by either player. Jean then won the next 5 ends to proceed to the final., winning the game 21 to 11.

In the final Invermay’s Bec Van Asch took on Jean Claridge from Scottsdale. Bec scored on 4 ends to be 8 to 0 up. Jean, then scored on the next two ends and Bec scored on the following 2 ends, the score at this stage was Bec 13 to 9 up. Jean won another end before Bec won 3 in a row to be leading 20 to 12, then Bec scored the one shot that she needed to take out the Bowls North Champion of Champions title for 2019-20. Final score was 21 to 12.
