OPEN WOMEN’S STATEWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT Rd 3 – 3RD MARCH 2024
By Madge Strochnetter Bowls North Ladies Director.

New Norfolk greeted us with a cool blustery winter’s morning, with the occasional light showers thrown in for good measure, for what was looking to be a great day of bowls. This is the final round for the current season.  First up the North played Bowls South.

The rink of Lyn Cornelius, Helen Pola, Teresa Turmine and led by Heather Thompson had a neck and neck battle for the first 6 ends before they took control, holding their opponents scoreless for 11 ends, to get up by 11 shots.

The rink of Denise Middap, Wendy Smith, Jean Claridge and led by Di Byard got off to a good start, only allowing their opponents to score on a few occasions. Keeping the pressure on, they came away with a 6 shot victory.

The rink of Satya Springer, Julie Bannon, Debbie Maher and led by Sophie Fletcher had a close encounter for the entire game, these ladies only went down by 3 shots in a match which could have gone either way, it was that tight.

The New Norfolk kitchen staff served up a wonderful lunch which was really enjoyed by everyone. It rained a bit while we were inside, which became intermittent light showers for the remainder of the day. Back out into the chilly air to face the  Bowls Tasmania Open State team.

Di Byard’s team  jumped out of the box with a 9 – 3 scoreline after the first 8 ends, then the state team scored 4 of the next 6 ends to close the gap to 2 shots. Then the northerners took over to finish with a 7 shot victory.

Sophie Fletchers team tried hard to keep up with their opponents, but whenever they had the shots there, the state team would take them off. It was a good effort by our ladies, keeping the gap to 5 at the most, but unlucky on the last end to lose a 5, going down by 10 shots for the game.

Heather Thompson’s team had a close game for the first 7 ends, before the state team took control and widened the gap. Our ladies were trying hard but unfortunately were unable to peg them back. A gallant effort none the less, the state team getting up by 14 shots.

Overall winners of the series were Bowls North in both the Open Women’s and Open Men.

A fantastic result for both the over 60’s and the BN open teams of Ladies and Men to take out the overall Shield in both series combined. How proud all Northern bowlers should be of their representatives in these events. Well, Done to All.

OPEN MEN’S SWC Rd 3 REPORT By BT & BN Open Men’s Selector David Heron

The third & final round of the State-Wide Challenge was held at The New Norfolk Bowls Club on Sunday 3rd March. The players were met with gale force winds, occasional showers & bitterly cold conditions with the occasional burst of sunshine making it tough for the players.

The Bowls North Open Men were represented by:
Rink 1.  M Jackson (Longford), O Morrison (Longford), J Thomas (Longford) & C Roach (Longford) (Skip).
Rink 2.  P Costello (East Launceston, J Frost (Westbury), T Stewart (Launceston) & K Walker (East Launceston) (Skip).
Rink 3. N Pedley (Kings Meadows), D Burke (Westbury) S Zeuschner (Kings Meadows) & A Page (Kings Meadows) (Skip).

Nigel Pedley came into the team after the late withdrawal of Adam Donohue & this was greatly appreciated at short notice.

The regional ladder was Bowls North on 24 points leading the North West on 17 points & the South on 14 points.

The Morning game saw us face the Bowls South Team & we eventually won by 9 shots overall. Aaron Page won well by 16 shots, Chris Roach lost by 7 shots & Kane Walker had a draw. The North started well & got away to a 15 shot or so overall lead before the South hit back & got to within 3 shots with 2 ends to play. Both the Aaron Page & Chris Roach rinks scored 3’s on their final end to get the North home.

The points table after the morning round saw Bowls North on 33 points, Bowls North West on 19 points & Bowls South on 17 points, meaning we had secured the overall trophy before playing the final round against the Tasmanian side.

We played the Tasmanian team in the Afternoon game losing by 1 shot overall with Aaron Page losing by 3 shots, Kane Walker losing by 10 shots & Chris Roach winning strongly by 12 shots. This was a meritorious performance from the Bowls North team starting well & really taking it up to their more fancied opponents. It was tied with an end to play with The Tasmanian team scoring 1 after a great end of bowls from all players.

On behalf of my fellow selectors Ray Boutcher & Chris Lee, I would like to sincerely thank the players who represented Bowls North for their commitment to the SWC series & for their standard of play & regional pride in bringing the trophy back to the North. Everyone contributed to a strong performance & I hope everyone will be keen to defend the title next season.

Open Women’s Statewide Challenge Report

This round of the Statewide challenge series was held at the Burnie Bowls Club on a very windy day, just like it was here in the North on Saturday. Temperature was around 20 degrees, which would have made it pleasant to play in, however the gusty conditions even gave the jack a bias a lot of times while it was getting rolled, very trying indeed.

The morning game saw Bowls North play against the Bowls Tasmania State team.

The team of Lyn Cornelius, Helen Pola, Teresa Turmine and led by Heather Thompson found themselves playing catch-up from end 1 with the Tasmanian team never letting up. Even in these conditions, they played well and were just too good for us, getting up by 10 shots.

The team of Denise Middap, Wendy Smith, Jean Claridge and led by Margaret Williams had a tight battle for the first 6 ends, then  their opponents put their foot down to manage a 10 shot win, however our ladies were still pushing hard, getting 4 shots on the final end.

The team of Di Byard, Julie Bannon, Debbie Maher and led by Bev Huett were holding their own for the first 9 ends, but then the Tasmanian team lifted their game to the next level, not letting the Bowls North team keep hold of their shots, getting up with an 18 shot win.

FINAL SCORES:
H.Thompson       9   lt    19   L.Banks

Bowls North 0 pts     Bowls Tasmania 12 pts

The Burnie Bowls Club provided us all with a delicious 2 course lunch which was much appreciated by everyone.

The afternoon session was against Northwest which saw some very interesting games unfolding.

H.Thompson’s rink took control of the game from the beginning, winning 6 ends in a row before the coast team were able to score an end. The northerners then ran away with a fine bowling performance before the NW team attempted a comeback, closing the gap a little, but our ladies maintained their composure to get up by 6 shots.

M.Williams rink started out with a tight battle, but then our team restricted them from scoring for the next 7 ends straight before the NW team tried to pull it back, but the BN team held on for a 5 shot victory. A good fight.

B.Huett’s team had a change of player prior to the game starting, due to Debbie Maher succumbing to an injury, therefore Sophie Fletcher took her place in the team. This proved to be a close encounter for the first half of the game, but then the coastal team pulled the trigger and took control, gaining the momentum to come out the victors 10 shots.  A good effort by our ladies.

FINAL SCORES:

ROUND 2    OVER 60S STATEWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT. 16/1/2024
By Madge Strochnetter.    BN Ladies Bowls Director.

We are back at the North Launceston Bowls Club on a day that started out overcast, but then it came out quite warm as the day went on. The morning round saw our players facing up against the state team. They were all good matches for the spectators to watch, but the state players began exerting their authority from the outset.

The team of Wendy Smith, Lyn Cornelius, Di Byard and led by Maggie Campbell got off to a reasonable start, making their opponents work hard for their shots. The first 6 ends were close but then the Jeanette Lane team hit their straps and broke away to a 7 shot victory. A great effort by our ladies.

The team of Lisa Coppe, Janet McCarthy, Patricia Freeman and led by Maxine Monson had a very tight game, keeping up with their opponents for the first 13 ends, then the Lyn Triffitt team gained a slight lead to get up with a 5 shot win, well done ladies on an exciting game to watch.

The team of Carol Taylor, Maxine Viney, Sue Ross and led by Barb Smith started off well, they kept it up to their opponents for the first 10 ends, but unfortunately for them, the experienced team led by Kim Saunders, took control to finish with an 11-shot win.  All 3 games were good to watch with a great exhibition of bowling on show.

Final scores:
M.Campbell   14  lost    21  J.Lane

Lunch was much appreciated by all, Maree and her team putting on a fine meal as always.  After lunch, it was back to business, with our players up against the North West Coast.

Maggie Campbell’s team got off to a flying start, leading by 10 shots after 8 ends. The team kept the pressure on for the entire 18 ends, finally coming out with a well earned 10 shots victory.

Maxine Monson’s team found themselves in a tight battle. The coastal team gained the upper hand by end 7, leading by 6 shots, but our team never gave up and pulled it back to a 2 shot advantage by end 14, the final 4 ends were neck and neck with a draw being the final result. A great tussle.

Barb Smith’s team had a struggle all the way through the entire 18 ends, with the opposition keeping on the pressure, not allowing our ladies to keep hold of their shots when they had them. Our ladies kept trying but the coasters were too strong.

Final scores:
M.Campbell      22   def     H.Sturzaker   12

Overall, it was a see-sawing type of day as far as results go, but our ladies were determined to get as many points as they could. BN would like to thank N.L.B.C. for the use of their clubhouse, the kitchen staff, bar staff, master boards turners, umpires and all the volunteers who helped. Also, the Green staff for presenting us with great greens to play on.

2023-24 WOMEN’S OPEN STATEWIDE CHALLENGE – Round 1.  3 DECEMEBR 2023

By BN Ladies Bowls Director, Madge Strochnetter.

A pleasant day greeted all the players at North Launceston Bowls Club today.

With the greens running nicely, we knew we were in for a great day of bowls, and we weren’t disappointed.

In the morning round, the Northern team played the N.W team.

The rink of Sophie Fletcher, Lyn Cornelius, Teresa Turmine and led by Heather Thompson got off to a strong start, taking control from the first bowl, with all 4 players teaming up well together. They only allowed their opponents, led by D.Harman, to score 10 shots to their 26 shots, finishing with a well-earned 16 shot win.

The rink of Satya Springer, Julie Bannon, Debbie Maher and led by Bev Huett had a very tight game with our ladies having bowls in the head consistently, then the NW team, led by A.Bickley, put together 4 terrific final ends to get up  over our ladies.  Despite the deficit, these ladies bowled well.

The rink of Denise Middap, Wendy Smith, Helen Pola and led by Jean Claridge also had a close contest. The NW team, led by A.Wooley, started off strong but our ladies gradually closed the gap to within 2 shots , but the opposition crawled back to get up by 4 in the finish. 15-19

Jean Claridge’s team found themselves in a tussle against the team led by T.Munro, but they kept their concentration firm and held on to get up by 3 shots.

BOWLS NORTH OPEN MEN’S STATEWIDE CHALLENGE Rd 3 REPORT By BT/BN Open Men’s Selector Selector David Heron

The final round of the Open Sides State-Wide Challenge was played at Burnie Bowls Club on Sunday 5th March. Overnight rain resulted in a slow green with the weather & resultant rain affected greens for all three rounds being not what we would have preferred.

Bowls North was represented by:

M Strochnetter (Longford) (Skip), C Walker (Bridport), P Costello (East Launceston), M Jackson (Longford).

K Walker (East Launceston)(Skip), B Avent (East Launceston), T Stewart (Launceston), A Page (Kings Meadows).

L Howell (Trevallyn)(Skip), D Minns (East Launceston), J Frost (Westbury), O Morrison (Longford).

Current State Squad members Michael Sims & Robert McMullen were unavailable for selection due to their participation in pennant grand finals in Melbourne.

We played The Bowls North West side in the morning game & lost by 25 overall (37-62). Mark Strochnetter lost by 16, Lucas Howell lost by 5 & Kane Walker’s rink lost by 4 shots. This was a comprehensive win by the very strong North West side which has a great mix of young talent & proven experience.

In the Afternoon match, we played the Number 2 North West Team. We secured an important morale boosting win by 18 shots (51-33) & 10 points with Mark Strochnetter winning by 10, Lucas Howell winning by 9 & Kane Walker’s rink losing by 1 shot.

The final overall points standings were North West 74, South 44 & North 26 – so a strong performance from the North West side.

Overall, The Bowls North Selectors were very pleased with the performances of all players with a number of players being given the opportunity to play at this level for the first time. No doubt the loss of key players to other regions & some unavailability’s have hurt Bowls North, but the commitment & willingness to represent our region could not be faulted.

WOMEN’S OPEN STATEWIDE CHALLENGE Rd 3. Report by Madge Strochnetter- Ladies Director

The third and final round of the Open Statewide Challenge was played on Sunday 5 March 2023 at the Burnie Bowls Club. Overnight rain in Burnie produced a heavy green for the bowlers. It made for some difficult bowling conditions in the morning games. Our first competitors were the NW 1 side.

The team of Kirsten Viney, Chloe Flanagan, Teresa Turmine and led by Deb Lee found themselves in a very tight game, going shot for shot, with only 3 of the 18 ends scoring a 2, the remaining  15 ends were all singles. Neither team could gain the upper hand with our ladies managing to hold on to a 1 shot win. 11 – 10, well done.

The team of Chloe Collins, Jean Claridge, Jess McMullen and led by Courtney Hobbs had a close contest with their opponents for the first 10 ends. (7-8, ) before the coasters stepped up to gain a  10 – 21 win.

The team of Denise Middap, Amber Walker, Maxine Monson and led by Rae Simpson found it hard going on the heavy track. Their opponents hit the lead from end 1, but after 10 ends, our ladies began making inroads with some really good bowling and cutting back the deficit somewhat. They went down 13 – 29 but held the coasters back a bit by scoring on 8 consecutive ends. There was some good bowling across all 3 rinks, even though we were unable to get the results we were after, our ladies never gave up. Good effort ladies.

Another enjoyable lunch was again provided by the Burnie kitchen volunteers, which was appreciated by all of the bowlers.

This afternoon’s games were against the North West 2 side in sunny conditions.

Deb Lee’s team again had a close encounter with their opponents with neither team able to break away from the other. With low scores for the first 11 ends, scores being 7-10, our ladies scored   2x4s and 2x3s over the last 7 ends which enabled them to get up 21-15 shots.

Rae Simpsons team had a low scoring game for the first 13 ends, 11-7. Then they scored a 4 which pulled them away to gain a 17-10 shot win.

Courtney Hobbs team took the lead from end 1, not allowing their opponents to get into a rhythm. The team kept the pressure on for the entire 18 ends, running away with a 20-8 shot victory.

All of the afternoon games were even more enjoyable to observe as you could see the confidence and determination of the northern players increasing as they played.

Overall, in trying conditions at the beginning of play at 10am to a sunny afternoon and the final 3 ends in cooler windy conditions, our players performed well on the day, even though the results did not go our way in the morning round, our ladies were able to turn it around in the afternoon. Well done by all.

Unfortunately, the overall results for the 3 rounds was disappointing for us as a team.

OPEN WOMEN’S OVERALL POINTS (Final)

Once again, we thank all clubs, volunteers, green keepers etc who were involved over the 3 rounds of competition.

It has been a pleasure to work alongside all of our Northern ladies, both senior and open, a very nice bunch of people.

SENIOR WOMEN’S Rd 3 Report by Madge Strochnetter

Well here we are, the last of our Senior Statewide Challenge for this season has begun. Burnie turned on a dampish green due to some early rain, which slowed the green a bit. So on an overcast morning things got underway with some sunshine making an appearance later on.
In the morning games, the Northern teams played against the Northwest no.1 team.
The team of Carol Taylor, Jean Claridge, Deb Lee and led by Kim Saunders took early control of the contest, leading 9-6 after 12 ends. They then went on to power home with a massive win of 26-8 shots. A great start for this team.
The team of Di Byard, Robyn Zoon, Bev Huett and led by Margaret Williams got off to a good start leading 11-6 after 8 ends, before the coastal team found their rhythm to put together a 19-24 win over our ladies. It was a very hard fought encounter.
The team of Denise Middap, Trici Freeman, Judy Gurr and led by Maxine Monson found the going difficult against their opponents. Even when our ladies had bowls in the head, the coasters managed to move them out, making it hard for our ladies to gain a lot of shots. The coastal team kept up the pressure to end up with a 14-39 win. A great disappointment for these ladies, but I am sure they will recover for their next game.

The Burnie Bowls Club put on a very delightful and enjoyable 2 course lunch for everyone. Then it was time to get back on the green against the NW2 team. This is the final round of the series for this season, and with the sun finally appearing made for a pleasant afternoon of bowling.
The team led by Maxine Monson were able to perform a complete reversal of their first round game. They hit their straps from the first bowl and after 8 ends our ladies led 13-1 and continued to keep their foot on the pedal for the entire game to establish a massive winning scoreline of 31-2 . A terrific outcome for these ladies.
The team led by Margaret Williams were matching it end to end for the first 6 ends, then the coastal team scored a 5, which could have disheartened our ladies, but instead it fired them up to score on the next 6 ends to bring the score 14-10, and the northerners continued on their merry way to take out the contest 18-13
The team led by Kim Saunders had a very close encounter for the entire 18 ends, some great shots were played by both teams with all players doing their part. The final result saw the northern women winning 18-13 shots up. An entertaining game to watch.

SENIORS SWC ROUND 2 REPORT – MEN

Round 2 of the Seniors (over 60’s) SWC was held on Tuesday 17th January 2023 at North Launceston. The Bowls North side had 7 debutantes to this format, which was great to see. Our 2 sides for the home round were.

NORTH 1:
M Billing (S), J.Borg, D Campbell, P Elmer
D Bassett (S), S Boden, P Zoon, R Groenewegen
D Minns (S), C Lee, D Heron, R Boutcher

NORTH 2:
N Pedley(S), D Heathcote, G McCarthy, B Roberts
S Gurr (S), R Claridge, W Groves, M Elmer
B.Hill (s), G.McDonald, B.Hodgetts, M.D-Veachia (East Coast representative rink)

Our northern sides struggled in the mornings games going down to both the North West and Southern sides. The North 1 side lost to the North West by 21 shots with the David Minns rink the sole winner by 4 shots. The North 2 side fared much better against the South winning on 2 rinks with Nigel Pedley winning by 8 and Shane Gurr by 4 over state skip Tony Vince, however we couldn’t cover the loss of the third rink.

In the afternoons games the North 1 side had a thrilling 1 shot win over the South to keep our title hopes alive. With North 1 4 shots down with 3 ends to play, we managed to win all 3 ends and claim victory. Dennis Bassett’s rink led the way with a resounding 17 shot win, Mitch Billing lost by 11 and David Minns picked up a 2 on the last end to end up 5 shots down. North 2 lost to the North West by 18 shots despite the great 12 shot win by Shane Gurr’s rink over state skip Greg Douce. Our East coast boys bounced back to lost by 4.

We now trail the NW by 2 points on the table and will need to win both games on the coast on Tuesday 28th February 2023 to win the state title.

BOWLS NORTH OPEN MENS Rd 2 STATEWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT by BT & BN Open Men’s Selector David Heron

The second round of The State-Wide Challenge was held at North Launceston Bowls & Community Club on Sunday 29 January.

Heavy overnight rain resulted in a delayed start with matches being reduced to 15 ends.

Bowls North was represented by:

M Strochnetter (Longford) (Skip), R McMullen (Kings Meadows), P Costello (East Launceston), M Jackson (Longford).

K Walker (East Launceston) (Skip), B Avent (East Launceston), T Stewart (Launceston), A Page (Kings Meadows).

L Howell (Trevallyn) (Skip), M Sims (Trevallyn), J Frost (Westbury), S Zeuschner (Kings Meadows).

Our second side consisted of:

C Walker (Bridport) (Skip), S Wain (Cosgrove Park), C Morrison (Longford), P Daines (Invermay).

S Davern (Kings Meadows) (Skip), C Felmingham (Longford), D Burke (Westbury), O Morrison (Longford).

B Slater (Kings Meadows) (Skip), S Alderson (Trevallyn), C Daines (Invermay), D Salter (East Launceston).

In the morning games North West defeated North 1 by 40-27 with Mark Strochnetter up by 1, Lucas Howell down by 4 & Kane Walker down by 10. Our second side played the South & were defeated 47-20 with all rinks losing, Shane Davern by 5, Byron Slater by 4 & Chris Walker by 18.

In the afternoon games South defeated North 1 by 46-37 with Mark Strochnetter up by 5, Lucas Howell down by 12 & Kane Walker down by 2. Our second side played the North West & were defeated 52-21 with all rinks losing, Shane Davern by 8, Byron Slater by 11 & Chris Walker by 12.

There is no doubt that the current North West & Southern sides are very strong & our loss of four high quality players from last year is hurting us. Mark Strochnetter’s rink recorded two very good wins & I am sure we will re-group & bounce back. Our second side contained six new players receiving an opportunity at this level for the first time & they will undoubtedly have gained invaluable experience from this.

The current point’s standings are North West 44, South 36 & North 16.

The third & final round of The State-Wide Challenge will be held on The North West Coast on Sunday 5th March.

WOMEN’S OPEN STATEWIDE CHALLENGE Rd 2 REPORT By Madge Strochnetter  (Ladies Director)

Sunday 29 January 2023 at North Launceston Bowls Club

After a very wet overnight soaking of rain, all players, officials, and spectators arrived at North Launceston with the rain still falling. After a short delay, everyone’s spirit rose when we could get out on the green to get the proceedings underway. In the morning games, our North 1 team played the North West and the North 2 team played the South on a damp green in overcast conditions.

NORTH 1  v  NORTH WEST
First up, we have the team of Chloe Collins, Jess McMullen, Amber Walker and led by Courtney Hobbs  who jumped out to a mini break being 12 to 4 after 8 ends. The team kept the pressure on to secure a 20 to 5 shots win.

The team of Kirsten Viney, Chloe Flannigan, Teresa Turmine and led by Mikayla Baker started out with a close game being 6 all after 9 ends, then the coastal team pulled away to win 7 to 16 shots.

The team of Denise Middap, Jean Claridge, Deb Lee and led by Rae Simpson were maintaining a small lead, being 10 to 4 up after 9 ends. With a tight battle ensuing, the coastal team started to find their range to eventually get up by 2 shots, 12 to 14. A great tussle.

The team of Julie Bannon, Cat Felmingham, Margaret Williams and led by Bev Huett found it hard going with their opponents, with close scoring for the first 8 ends, but then the southerners started to break away bit by bit to gain a winning margin of 9 to 18 shots.

The team of Lyn Cornelius, Sue Ross, Barb Smith and led by Maggie Campbell found the going a bit tough to begin with. The southern team broke away, no matter what our ladies threw at them. Our ladies tried hard to pull it back but were unable to do so. The end result saw the south get up 12 to 27 shots.

Our hats go off to our North 2 team for their valiant efforts, as their teams had a lot of late shuffling about, due to overnight withdrawals of players due to injuries, other commitments etc. Some had no idea who they were playing with until they arrived at the venue to play. They did well to gel together as a playing team. Congrats ladies.

Then it was lunch time, the kitchen volunteers served up a very enjoyable 2 course meal, appreciated by all. Back out to the green, the Nth 1 team play the south and the Nth 2 team play the NW. The sun was shining brightly by this time and the conditions a lot more pleasant.

Courtney Hobbs team were going neck and neck for the entire game with neither side able to break away with the Northern team managing to hold on to a 12 to 10 shot victory.

Rae Simpsons team also had an even start, keeping up with their opponents until the 11th end, the northern ladies then began to gain the upper hand holding on to the lead with a 14 to 9 shot win.

Maggie Campbells team were faced with a quick start by the other team, but pulled it back to 7 all after 5 ends. The game from then on was shot for shot with neither side giving an inch. The score was 14 all going into the last end with the NW getting the all important last shot by way of skip Ali Venn and her last bowl.  Final score 14 to 15 shots.

Bev Huetts team had an extremely close encounter going shot for shot from the outset. The NW team managed to grab the last shot of the day to snatch a 1 shot victory. 9 to 10 shots.

The second round of the Statewide Challenge was held at North Launceston Bowls Club on Tuesday 17th Janusry 2023. Very warm conditions greeted the players from all over the state. Bowls North supply 2 sides today with it being held in the north of the state.
The North 1 side against the NW side
The team of Di Byard, Robyn Zoon, Bev Huett and led by Margaret Williams started out in fine form, they jumped out to a 17 to 3 lead after 11 ends before their opponents began to reduce the difference by scoring a run of singles, but our ladies stayed firm to gain a 7 shot win.
The team of Denise Middap, Patricia Freeman, Judy Gurr and led by Maxine Monson were neck and neck with their opposition for the first 5 ends before taking a strangle hold on the game by scoring another 21 shots and keeping the NW team to only scoring 5 more shots. A massive performance by these ladies to win by 17.
The team of Carol Taylor, Jean Claridge, Deb Lee and led by Kim Saunders also had a terrific start, maintaining a steady pace to not let their opposition get a rhythm happening, running away with the game to win by a big 21 shots.
FINAL RESULTS: Williams 20 def Thow 13, Monson 26 def Elsworthy 9, Saunders 26 def Redman 5
North 2 side. Against the South team
The team of Madge Strochnetter, Lyn Cornelius, Barb Smith and led by Maggie Campbell had a very close game for the first 8 ends, then the Southern team claimed the next 5 ends which caused them to break away, but then the north team staged a bit of a comeback to close the gap somewhat, to end up going down by 7 shots.
The team of Lisa Coppe, Janet McCarthy, Sue Ross and led by Maureen Zoon were holding their own for the first 13 ends, then their opposition managed to break away. Our ladies then recovered again to only go down by 7 shots. A great effort.
The East Coast team of Julie Keane, Cheryl Hodgetts, Vicki Whately and led by Judy Holmes were keeping up with the Southern team for the first 12 ends, and then their opponents took control to maintain their grip on the game, with our ladies going down by 19 shots.
All 3 teams tried hard but were unable to achieve the desired result, but well done to all.
FINAL RESULTS: Campbell 15 lt Greeves 22, Zoon 13 lt Triffit 21, Holmes 9 lt Lane 28

North 1 against South.
Maxine Monson’s team had a very close game, with the southern team taking the lead on the 9th end, but our ladies still made them work hard for the little lead they did have, only going down by 2 shots, such a mighty effort.
Margaret Williams team kept their opposition under control, not letting them gain any advantage at all. With a great exhibition of bowling, our ladies kept the pressure on to win by 6 shots.
Kim Saunders team found themselves in a battle with their opposition, with a game that had a lot of ups and downs, but unable to pull it right back, our ladies only went down by 8 shots, well done to get it back to that.
FINAL RESULTS: Monson 14 lt Lane 16, Williams 21 def Greeves 15, Saunders 11 lt Triffit 19.
North 2 against NW
The East Coast team took control of a tight game, managing to just stay ahead throughout most of the game to pull off a great 1 shot win. Very entertaining to watch the skip encouraging her players.
Maggie Campbells team also had a tough battle with their opponents, keeping it close the entire game, being level on the 17thend. Unfortunately dropping a 4 on the last end, which gave the game to the coast team.
Maureen Zoons team were having a close one with their opponents, but then the coastal team started to gain the upper hand to take the win by 7 shots.

Senior  SWC.    Round 1.  Written by Madge Strochnetter.

Our seniors rolled up to the New Norfolk bowls club to face a day of inclement weather conditions, with showers, sunshine, overcast and wind  keeping the bowlers company all day. With the games shortened to 15 ends each, the 2 games were  being played consecutively , followed by a delightful  late lunch.

The morning game saw our players face the southern no 2 team.

The rink consisting of Carol Taylor, Jean Claridge, Robyn Zoon and skipped by Kim Saunders saw a very tight game with no team able to break away. After 15 ends our ladies managed to hold on to get up by 1 shot, 13 – 12 over their opposition.

The rink of Denise Middap, Patricia Freeman, Judy Gurr and skipped by Maxine Monson had a very close battle for the first 12 ends, with our ladies leading by 3 shots, they then scored a 5 to lead 21 -13 and finishing up 23 – 15.

The rink of Di Byard, Barb Smith, Bev Huett and skipped by Margaret Williams were also in a close encounter, they found themselves 8-12 down after 11 ends, then they applied some pressure to their opponents to finish up 13 all.

Three very entertaining and well fought out games. Well done by all.  Final Scores were :-

Saunders 13  def Nielsonbeck 12.   Monson 23 def Ridgeway 15   Williams 13 dw McCann 13

The next round was against the souths no 1 team.

The second  game saw the rink of Margaret Williams get off to a good start being 7-3 up after 4 ends, with a steady game they were able to overcome the team led by L Triffitt 18-11.

Maxine Monsons team got off to a flying start being 11-8 after 11 ends to take control of the game to finish 18-9 over Rosie Geeves team.

Kim Saunders team grabbed a stranglehold  over  Jeanette Lanes team and kept their foot on the pedal to complete a well deserved win 26-4. Fantastic results all across the green for Bowls  North.

Final Scores were :-       Williams 18 def  Triffitt 11       Monson 18 def  Geeves 9  Saunders 26 def Lane 4

A terrific result by all our  ladies  to finish the day with 5 wins and 1 draw from 6 games.

We should all be proud of these ladies, I know I am. Also a job well done by our men’s  team’ who also had a successful day.

As everyone put in such  a good effort today with great bowling, there were too many highlights across the rinks to comment on them all, so please take this as a general summing up of a day of fantastic bowls by all.

OPEN MEN’S STATWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT BY David Heron

The first round of the Open Sides State-Wide Challenge was played at Kingborough Bowls Club on Sunday 4th December.

Bowls North was represented by:

M Strochnetter (Longford) (Skip), M Jackson (Longford), S Davern (Kings Meadows), P Costello (East Launceston).

K Walker (East Launceston)(Skip), B Avent (East Launceston), T Stewart (Launceston), G Ayton (Invermay).

L Howell (Trevallyn)(Skip), D Minns (East Launceston), J Frost (Westbury), S Zeuschner (Kings Meadows).

Current State Squad members Michael Sims, Robert McMullen & Aaron Page were unavailable for selection.

We played The Bowls South Number 2 Side in the morning game & lost by 8 overall (44-52). Mark Strochnetter lost by 9, Lucas Howell lost by 18 & Kane Walker’s rink secured 2 points for the North with a 19 shot win.

The South got on top of us early & despite a strong comeback from the middle stages of the game onwards, we were unable to make up the margin.

In the Afternoon match, we played the Number 1 South Team which won the overall title last season. We secured an important overall win by 9 shots (54-45) & 10 points with Mark Strochnetter losing by 11, Lucas Howell winning by 3 & Kane Walker’s rink winning by 17 shots.

Our team got away to a much better start in this game with Kane Walker’s rink at one stage leading 18 nil & this result capped off a great day for the Walker rink.

Overall, The Bowls North Selectors were very pleased with the performances of all players with a number of players being given the opportunity to play at this level for the first time.

Gene Ayton leaves to live in Queensland at the end of December & he played very well for us on Sunday. We thank him for his service to Northern Bowls both as a player, administrator & contributor & wish him the very best in this life changing move.

WOMEN’S OPEN STATEWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT BY Madge Strochnetter

SWC OPEN  Rd 1 Held at Kingborough Bowls Club on Sunday 4 December 2022

It is that time of the Tasmanian Bowls Season again.

The first round of the SWC began today with the northern open teams taking on the 2 southern teams at the Kingborough Club. After the welcoming of all players from the 3 regions, the games began. The morning game saw us take on the southern 2nd team first.

The rink of Kirsten Viney, Chloe Flanagan, Teresa Turmine, ably led by Mikayla Baker found themselves on an even par against the southern rink, led by D. Peck. Both teams were going end for end until our ladies managed to keep their opponents scoreless for 5 straight ends to lead 13 to 7, then Pecks team made a comeback to close the game up to within 5 shots difference going into the last end. Our ladies were holding game until the skip altered the head to grab 5 shots. However, our ladies still managed to hold on to gain 2 points for the north, with a 17 to 16 win.

The rink of Denise Middap, Jean Claridge, Deb Lee and led by Rae Simpson also had a very tight game with no-one gaining the upper hand. It was a tussle that found getting more than 2 consecutive ends were impossible to manage, with great bowls played by both skips at the necessary times. This was an enticing game to watch, with the team lead by T. Davis managing to win the game by 1 shot.

The rink of Jess McMullen, Bev Huett, Judy Gurr and led by Maxine Monson found themselves facing strong opposition, with the team led by Lyn Triffitt pulling out all the stops. On most of the ends our ladies had them there, but Lyn brought her A Game with her and played brilliantly. Our ladies went down 9 to 19 but put on a great performance.

It is to be noted that all 3 northern leads played excellent bowls on most of the ends, but as what usually happens, the opposition didn’t leave them there for long.

Final morning scores
M  Baker  17   def   D. Peck 16
R Simpson 14   lt    T. Davis 15
M.Monson    9   lt   L. Triffitt 19

A great effort by all 3 teams.

After a very enjoyable lunch provided by the host club, it was back out onto the green again, against the southern no. 1 team.

Mikayla Bakers team started out in fine form, surprising their opponents by leading 14 to 5 up on the 10th end. Then the team led by Crystal Brooks picked themselves up to attempt a comeback, putting together some consecutive ends to bring the score line closer, but our ladies held their nerve to come up with a 19 to 16 victory.

Maxine Monson’s team got off to a great start, matching it with their opponents, led by Maddie Johnson. This game became a tug of war, with no side giving an inch, with our ladies only just going down by 1 shot 14 to 15. A very entertaining game for the spectators.

Rae Simpsons team were also facing a formidable team, led by Lauren Banks. They were 10 all after 12 ends but then the southern team made a break and took the lead, holding on to win 13 to 22. Our ladies tried hard to pull it back, but things didn’t go their way.

Final Scores
M.Baker 19   def   C. Brooks 16
M.Monson 14    lst   M. Johnson 15
R. Simpson 13   lst   L. Banks   22

Our ladies performed admirably in both rounds today, even though the final scores didn’t end up in our favour for the most part, the quality of bowls played were a pleasure to watch.

Hopefully things will go our way in the next round.

Very proud to be involved with these women as their manager.

OPEN WOMEN’S STATEWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT by M Strochnetter BN Women’s Director

WOW… What a fantastic day of bowls on display at the North Launceston Bowls Club on Sunday 6 Match 2022 as the final round of the Bowls Tasmania Statewide competition was played. It was a blustery day for the Open players, but good greens welcomed them all and it was Bowls North turn to field two home sides.

In the morning round against the Northwest team, our ladies 1st Team performed well against their opposition.

The rink of Kirsten Viney, Chloe Flanagan, Mikayla Baker led by team captain Candice Ayton got off to a slow start with the Northwest team leading 2 -11 after five ends. Then the ladies began to cope better with the wind and slowly got up to finish with a 1 shot win. Final score was 17 -16.

The rink of Jess McMullen, Emily Foster and Maxine Monson led by Kim Saunders jumped out of the box with an impressive exhibition of bowls to not allow their opposition to get into any sort of rhythm to finish with a commanding 18 -10 win.

The rink of Denise Middap, Jean Claridge and Debra Lee, led by Rae Simpson struggled with the conditions to begin with being 3 -10 down after 10 ends but then they started to find their form scoring 9 shots to 4 in the last 8 ends to only go down by 2 shots.

Our 2nd Team of ladies faced up against the strong Southern team. The rink of Logyn Curtis, Sue Ross and Barb Smith and their skipper Sophie Fletcher had a steady first 10 ends they was up by 1 shot to which they continued to maintain their level of play to finish with a 3 shot win.

The rink of Katelyn Cawthen, Zoe Whelan and Judy Gurr led by Bev Huett were going shot for shot to be 9 all after 12 ends. On the 13th end the Southerners scored 3 shots, which remained the difference till the end of the game. Final score 12 -15.

The rink of Chloe Collins, Catherine Felmingham, and Maggie Campbell led by Teresa Turmine had a remarkably close encounter all the way throughout the match, with no team breaking away at any stage. The final score of 14 -18 shows how tight a game it was.

With the morning round over the points obtained was 10 points to Team 1 and 2 points to Team 2. A fantastic outcome for our overall position.

After the morning games both the Men’s & Women’s teams were treated to a very nice two course lunch by the host club. Unfortunately, the wind did not die down during the lunch break.

The Afternoon games saw Team 1 take on the South Team and Team 2 the Northwest. Candice Ayton and her team had a fairly even contest for the first half and with some superb bowling by all 4 players gained themselves a final score line of 18 – 11.

Kim Saunders and her team also had a tight match with ends going neck to neck with the Northern Ladies managing to hang on for a 4-shot win. Final score was 18-14.

Rae Simpson and her team got away to a slow start being 8 -12 down after 9 ends. It was on the 10th end that our ladies picked up a 3 and continued to gain momentum from that point finishing with a terrific 23 -18 win.

Team 2 took on the Northwest team with enthusiasm. Sophie Fletcher and her team also had a close contest being 6 all after 5 ends. For the remainder of the game, it was a close all the way with no team giving an inch, with our Ladies finishing with a 15 -14 win.

Teresa Turmine and her team also had a close game with the score line being locked at 8 all after 4 ends. They fought hard, being down 7 shots after 11 ends to have a great fightback to only go down by 1 shot. Final score was 18 -19.

Bev Huett’s team opposition jumped ahead to control the early ends but with their fighting spirit our Northern Ladies possess, they fought back. Regardless of how many bowls our Ladies had in the head, the Coastal Skip was too good. Either drawing shots or running through the head. Our Ladies went down 10 -22 but the score line does not reflect the quality of the game played.

With the three rounds of competition over, the results showed the Open Ladies winning the trophy with the total of 62 points. The Open Men’s team finished in second place with 48 points.

We were also pleased to welcome our first-time players into the Statewide Challenge sides and hope to see even more next year. A big welcome back to our stalwart Kim Saunders after a time out due to illness.

A huge congratulations to all Northern Players, being Juniors, Open and the Senior teams. Well done to all on a successful year on the greens.

Congratulations everyone, another terrific year in Bowls Tasmania Statewide Challenge Series again. All our players in all disciplines deserve the accolades as they represented the North superbly & proudly.

Round 3 Senior Statewide Challenge Report

North Launceston hosted the 3rd round of Bowls Tasmania Over 60’s SWC on Tuesday (1/03/22). As per the conditions of play for home sides we fielded two sides and both played against the best from the South and North West. It was also great to have an East Coast representative rink part of our 24. Our Men’s representatives were:

TEAM A:
Ray Boutcher, Dale Walker, Shane Gurr, David Heron (S)
Paul Elmer, Les Watts, Rodney Murray, Dennis Bassett (S)
Warren Groves, Wayne Foster, Shane Boden, Roger Long (S)
TEAM B:
John Borg, Paul Elsby, Malcolm Turner, Mike Hansell (S)
Robert Walsh, Kerry Smith, Craig Bennett, Rob Claridge (S)
Ray Villain, Garry Laycock, Michael Seymour, Barry Hill (S) – East Coast Rink

In the morning game our A’s took on and beat the North West in a great game of bowls. In a classic game for the spectators there was very little separting any rink or the ovrall score all game, and as we approached the last few ends it was all tied up and set for a thriller. The last few ends were shared and the Bassett rink was left to play the last end against Wayne Manson from the Coast, needing a 3 to win. With 1 Bassett bowl left to play we were 1 down however with bowls in the head. Skip Bassett and his 3rd “Vider” Murray hatched a plan to play weight and try to gain the kitty. Bassett played it perfectly and the North West bowl disappeared, Bassett’s bowl stayed and we picked up a 3 for a great win against the eventual champions. Bassett def Manson 17-10, Heron lost to Richardson 12-14, and Long lost to Douce 14-18.

Our B’s played the South in a terrific game of bowls. With quite a few debutants, our B’s settled in quickly taking it up to the South and led by 2 shots overall at one point. The South however proved too strong and won on 2 rinks with our East Coast Boys winning 18-15 in a great performance against state Over 60’s Skip Shane Young. In other rinks Claridge lost to Vince 13-26 and Hansell lost to Marshall 13-15.

In the afternoon our A’s were to strong for the South and our B’s found the North West Coast team a little too good. Our A’s led from start to finish, however a late fightback from the South cut the margin to 4 shots. This win made it 4 from 4 for our A’s over the last 2 rounds to finish off in great form. Bassett’s rink with debutant Paul Elmer leading well, and well supported by Les Watts and Rodney Murray ran out 15 shot winners over Tony Vince, Roger Long went down by 10 to Marshall and David heron had another very close loss going down by 1 to Young.

Our B’s coped the brunt of the NorthWest’s anger at losing to the A’s in the mornin. The North West team showed why they are the Champions and were simply too good. Hansell lost to Douce, Claridge lost to Richardson and Barry Hill’s East Coast rink lost to Manson.

Thanks to all the players for a great series and hope they all come back next year.

Regards

Chris Lee

Rebecca Van Asch team were having a tight battle with their opponents for the first six ends, then with a fine exhibition of team bowling, they broke away to eventually take the game by 6 shots.

Candice Ayton led her ladies in a great team effort to an impressive 13 shot lead after 14 ends. Their opposition made a comeback after that but our Northern Ladies held their nerve to come home with a 3 shot win.

Rae Simpson and her team got off to a flying start with an amazing 20 shot lead on the 9th end. Then after a 15 minute time out called by the South after conferring with the umpire. The Southern team staged a mini comeback to try to get themselves back in the game but our Ladies started to find their rhythm again to take back control. They came away with an 11 shot win.

Another 12 points to add to our overall tally. A great day by all the Ladies achieving the full compliment of 24 points on the day was fantastic outcome for our Northern Ladies. The ladies also wish to congratulate the Northern Men on their great games.

BN MEN’S OVER 60’S REPORT RD 2 – BY CHRIS LEE

BN Over 60’s men made the trip to Hobart on Tuesday, to take on the two Southern sides at the Beltana BC.

Fielding 2 debutants in Joey Walker(KM) and Jim Bannon(WBY) our boys can away with 2 great wins and a feeling of relief after letting both games slip against the NWC.

BOWLS NORTH OVER 60’s ROUND 2 TEAM:

Rink 1: W.Groves (CP), S.Boden (INV), P.Zoon (INV), R.Long (Trev)(s).

Rink 2: D.Walker (KM), A.Bannon (WBY), S.Gurr (KM), D. Heron (KM)(s)

Rink3: M.Clayton (EL), R.Murray (Trev), L.Watts (WBY), D.Bassett (INV)(s)

In the 1st game played against a very strong South 2 side Roger Long drew Peter Jenkins, Dennis Bassett drew Leigh Munnings and David Heron drew Michael Copperman.

We started strongly with our front ends playing extremely consistent bowls, however the south rinks were winning the ends and we were 2 down after 15 ends, with Bassett leading 5-3. The after 30 ends we had edged clear leading by 7 shots with Bassett leading by 3 and Long by 4. The next 15 ends all belonged to our BN boys as we stretched the lead to 20, picking up 12 of the 15 ends played. Having spoken before play about the need to finish strongly in the rep games and having all the momentum we again fell away over the last 9 ends losing 5 of the ends and giving back 9 shots. The Heron rink dropped a 4 on the last to lose by 1, 17-18, Long won 19-13 and Bassett after dominating all game dropped a 5 on the last to win by 6, 19-13.

The 2nd game was an outstanding game of bowls on what could only be described as an ordinary green. Long drew Peter Marshall, Heron drew Tony Vince and Bassett drew Shane Young.

Again we started strongly with all players adapting well to the new green and jumped out to a 5 shot lead after the 15 ends. Long lead 8-1, Bassett 5-1 and Heron was down early 1-7. The next 15 all belonged to the southern rinks as we found ourselves down by 5 shots after 20 ends although the signs weren’t too bad as we were playing OK bowls, with the southerners just too good. The next 15 were pretty tight and after 45 ends we were only 4 shots down, Bassett 13-12 – Heron after being 6-13 down led 18-14 and Long struggling at 12-21, another nail biter loomed, surely we can close this one out!

The 16th end was all ours as we picked up a 2, 3 and 1 to take a 2 shot lead with 6 to play. On the 17th long picked by another 3 to now only trail by 3, Heron dropped 1 and Bassett 3 down in the head, drove with great result and then drew another to pick up 2. That left us 3 up with 3 to play. Long was 1st to finish picking up another shot to finish a great comeback and only go down by 2, 19-21. Heron was next to finish and dropped a 3 to finish 18-18 and leave us with a 1 shot lead for the Bassett rink to protect. Bassett went to the head 3 down and again the only option was to drive, which he did and smacked it brilliantly, however remained 1 down. Shane Young drew a 2nd for the southerners to put them in front, before Bassett drew a front toucher. Young missed with his last and we finally finished off a game and got a great win for BN.

The next round will see us field 2 sides against both the South and North West at North Launceston.

BOWLS NORTH OPEN SWC CHALLENGE LADIES REPORT

Burnie presented us with a mostly sunny but windy day on Sunday 23, making for some great games of bowls. Although our captain/skip had to pull out due to injury, Candice filled in as capitain and Bev Huett took the reins as skip in Bec’s place.

In the norning games, the rink led by Candice had a close game with neither team gaining the upper hand, but eventually the Northern team were able to come out with the win, by 3 shots.

The rink led by Rae Simpson, after a tidy start by both teams, took control of the game halfway through with a handy 5 shot win.

The rink led by Bev Huett found their opposition jumping out of the box to take an early lead to obtain a 12 shot win. Bev and her team tried hard to pull them back, a good effort none the less.

Overall for the morning round BN 4 points – NW1 8 points.

In the afternoon, the Ayton team had a very tight encounter, being level going into the last end and the Coastal team scoring 2 shots on the last end to take the game.

The Simpson team had a close start, but by the 8th end they took charge of the game and finished off with a commanding 18 shot victory.

The Huett team had a very close first half of the game, but then the Coastal team applied a lot of pressure by improving their performance to come out with a 13 shot win.

Overall for the afternoon games – BN 8 points – NW2 4 points.

With some very exciting bowling over the course of the day, our Northern Ladies performed well against a strong Coastal contingent. They represented themselves and the North extremely well by putting on a great performance. They did us proud.

Well done to all Players – Madge Strochnetter BN Women’s Director

MEN’S OPEN STATEWIDE CHALLENGE 2021-22 REPORT – BY David Heron

Round 1 of the Open Men’s Satewide Challenge was played at Burnie Bowls Club on 23/01/2022.
In the morning game the North played the very strong North West Number 1 side.

Michael Sims with his team of Joey Thomas, Kane Walker & Lachie Sims played Tim Douce and won 21 to 11in a strong rink performance.

Josh Appleyard with Josh Walker-Davis, David Minns & Aaron Page in support played Taleyn Male and won a nail bitter 24 to 23 in a game featuring some high scoring ends.

Mark Strochnetter & his rink of Scott Zeuschner, Chris Roach, & Robert McMullen played the ever dangerous Mark Nitz and was defeated 13 to 23.

With one end overall to play, the North required 4 shots to tie or 5 shots to win with Mark Strochnetter’s rink left on the green. Our player’s all contributed to the head with Mark Strochnetter drawing a fifth shot after Mark Nitz was wide with his last bowl to pull off what had seemed an unlikely win.

We played the North West Number 2 side in the afternoon game.
Mark Strochnetter defeated Sam McClean 17 to 10, Josh Appleyard defeated Josh Marshall 26 to 11 and Michael Sims defeated Eden Moore 15 to 12 to complete a 3 rink overall win by 25 shots.

This was a very strong performance by all our player’s and leaves us level on 22 points with the South. Making our trip to Hobart on Sunday 13th February  very important in the overal competition.

BOWLS NORTH STATEWIDE CHALLENGE ROUND 3 REPORT (Report by Madge Strochnetter & David Heron)

The Northern Women’s & Men’s sides travelled down South to Claremont Bowls Club and we were pleased to find the Claremont greens running free and the weather conditions were perfect. Both the Men’s & Women’s side was in an extraordinarily strong position in the Statewide Challenge Series titles for 2020-21.

WOMEN’S REPORT:

The Open Women’s side played South 2 in the morning round. A nice display of bowling was exhibited by all our ladies.

The rink led by Rae Simpson took control of the game from the onset and came out winners 29 to 10. Kim Saunders rink had a good tussle then took charge midway through and come out winners 17 to 9 win. Rebecca Van Asch led her rink through a tight game to only go down by 1 shot, 16 to 17. A successful morning for our ladies gaining 10 points.

In the afternoon round against the South’s number one side, Rae’s rink was on fire again with a commanding display of bowling to finish with a 24 to 10 win. Rebecca’s rink had an even start with their opponents and from about the 8th end took over the game to have a 22 to 11 win. Kim Saunders rink had a close game for the entire time finishing 16 all after 17 ends. With some exceptionally good bowls by all players, they managed to score 3 shots to give them the victory.

A fantastic day by all the team, with bringing home the shield as overall winners of the Women’s Statewide open series. All were immensely proud of their achievement, not forgetting the contributions made by who were unavailable for Round 3 but played in the previous 2 rounds.

I am sure that all our Northern bowlers are feeling proud of their team. We are also so proud of our Men’s side who also put on a great exhibition of bowling, reaping good results as well, as you will see from the Men’s report.

We are all looking forward to next year’s events.

MEN’S REPORT:

An extraordinarily strong performance was displayed by our players against a particularly good Southern number 2 side in the morning match.

NORTH 63 def SOUTH 2 44
J Appleyard 14 lt G Wakefield 18
M Sims 32 def J Fowler 10
M Strochnetter 17 def A Norris 16

This was a strong performance by our players against a particularly good number 2 Southern side. Michael Sims rink was always in control creating pressure end after end and recorded a couple of big scores on their way to a convincing win. Mark Strochnetter’s rink led throughout and withstood a late challenge to record another solid win.

Our players all performed well and consistently created chances. Josh Appleyard’s rink encountered strong opposition throughout with the Southern Skipper pulling off some big saves at times when we looked to be getting on top.

The overall win ensured that we could not lose the Shield, and this took the pressure of our players as we faced up to the top Southern side in the afternoon round.

NORTH 62 def SOUTH 48
J Appleyard 11 lt N Curto 27
M Sims 22 def P Bannister 12
M Strochnetter 29 def W Coad 9

This was a terrific effort from our players given that we had already won the title, but the team desire was to finish off the series in style leaving no doubt as to who the best side was. Josh Appleyard faced a Southern rink that got away to a flyer and full credit must be given to this Southern rink that played very well all game.

Mark Strochnetter’s rink recorded an all the way win to complete a big day for this rink and also a great overall series. Michael Sim’s rink recorded his second big win for the day to complete a terrific series as well.

The Bowls North Open Men’s selectors, Chris Lee, Graeme Burnie, and David Heron would like to congratulate all player’s who represented the North in this series for their professionalism, attendance at the practice sessions and their gameday attitude and preparation. There are nay highlights including a top win by our Number 2 side over the South which lifted everyone.

The rinks gelled well together and there was a noticeable team spirit amongst the players. We are proud of everyone’s performances and we should achieve a strong representation in the State side.

We look forward to next year and the opportunity to defend our title and keep the North as the top region in Tasmanian Bowls.

Reports by David Heron BN Open Selector & Madge Strochnetter BN Women’s Bowls Director.

48 men & women from the Bowls North region took to the free running greens at North Launceston for Round 2 of Bowls Tasmania Open Statewide Challenge Series that was a pleasure for the players to play on.

MEN’S RESULTS:

Morning round:

Our number 1 side performed very solidly to record pleasing win against an exceptionally good North West side. WE started well which has been a recent issue for us and we maintained a good margin throughout the match to always be in control. The even contribution from all our players meant that the pressure was always on our opposition.

Our number 2 side provided the morning shock with a stunning win over the Southern side who was on the top of the table after Round 1 matches in Burnie. Gene’s Ayton rink won 5 of the last 6 ends to give our other rinks an opportunity to pull off an upset. We were proud to see so many players put their hand up to challenge the best player’s in the state and pull off a huge upset.

AFTERNOON ROUND:

Our number 1 side got off to another great start leading by 15 early before the inevitable Southern challenge came. They evened the scores up before we rallied to record another solid win.

Mark Strochnetter and Michael Sims’s rink both had 2 top wins for the day and Josh Appleyard’s rink won their second game and would have gained a lot from the day.

Our number 2 side performed well against the North West side. There was never more than 10 shots margin in the game, but we could not string together the ends to get closer on the score board. The Bowls North Open selectors were immensely proud of the efforts of this side with four debutants players and other players being given the opportunity to see how they matched up against the best from other regions. Kane Walker’s won both games and a number of players produced encouraging performances that indicated they can play at this level.

WOMEN’S

The Ladies 1 Northern team had a very satisfying day with 2 rink wins and overall, in both the morning games against the North West Coast team, and again in the afternoon against the Southern team, giving them a total of 20 from a possible 24 points. They played extremely well as a team in very warm summery conditions at North Launceston Bowls Club.

The Northern number 2 side had some tight games against the Southern side in the morning with one rink managing to secure a draw. This was a great effort displayed by all the players who participated.

In the afternoon against the North West Coast, one rink had a delightful 20 shot win which gave them the overall points. The Bowls North 2 side had a nice mixture of experienced players, mixed with youth to give a creditable performance on the day.

A strong overall performance by all 24 players produced a total of 29 points for the North on the day.

I am sure all our Northern bowlers were feeling proud of our ladies with represented them.

OPEN STATEWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT 2021 – Round 1

In the first round of the Open SWC, the women’s side put in a good performance in very trying, freezing cold and extremely windy conditions on a slowish green.

The Open women’s side played North West 1 in the morning game, C Ayton’s rink got off to a flying start and finished strongly winning by 18 shots. R Van Asch rink got off to a slow start but slowly pulled it back to only go down by 4 shots. C Hobb’s rink came up against a determined North West team, they put in a good effort, going down by 21 shots.

In the afternoon games against North West B, C Hobb’s rinks regrouped and jumped out of the box early and kept the pressure on finishing 14 shots up on their opponents.  R Van Asch Rink also applied early pressure to finish 21 shots up. C Ayton’s rink had a much tighter match and won by 5 shots.

A great strong team effort by all our Ladies today in some very difficult conditions.

How often do you see players drinking coffee and hot chocolate all day to try to keep warm so they could perform to their best ability.

Our Northern Men played the North West 1 side in the morning game. The North ended up winning by 2 shots overall with the results being:

M Sims defeated T Male 19-12

M Strochnetter defeated M Nitz 18-14

A Page was defeated by D Gamble 15-24

This was an exceptionally good effort from our players with a feature being the comeback of A Page’s rink who were well down early with the North West rink on fire but managed to close the gap to give our other rinks a chance to win overall.

M Strochnetter rink did very well against State Skip M Nitz and M Sim’s rink was left on the green with two ends to play and scored a two, then one to get us home – A great effort.

In the afternoon game, we played the North West number 2 side which contained a number of former state representatives & players who could easily have been in their number 1 side. It was hard to believe the conditions could be even windier than they were in the morning, but they were, making it difficult for players to put down two bowls the same.

The North lost by 2 shots overall with the results being:

M Sims was defeated by T Simpson 16-22.

M Strochnetter defeated C Windram 26-13.

A Page was defeated by Brown 9-18.

We unfortunately got away to a slow start again with the North West team adjusting to the tricky conditions better than us. We were probably a dozen or so shots behind for the majority of the game but again staged a late comeback & were in a position to win the game in the last few ends, but the North West steadied & fully deserved their win.

BOWLS NORTH WOMEN’S OVER 60’S SIDE STATEWIDE CHALLENGE SIDE

BOWLS TASMANIA JUNIOR STATEWIDE CHALLENGE

Bowls North Juniors competed in the first round of the Bowls Tasmania Statewide Challenge series on Sunday November 29. This event was originally scheduled to be played at Longford Bowls Club but due to the inclement weather the games was transferred to Kings Meadows Bowls Club Indoor Centre.

Bowls South was the big winners on the day winning 7 out of the 8 games that was played, North West won 5 whilst the Bowls North Juniors unable to secure any wins.

The score line in the matches our Juniors participated in does not reflect the standard of bowls that was played by them. And they never gave up at any stage throughout the matches.

Our group of Juniors this year are a young group and under the watchful eyes of Bowls North Junior Coach Rae Simpson, Bowls North Board Junior Development Officer Dennis Bassett and BN Junior Selector Mark Strochnetter that Juniors are progressing well and they have been attending Monthly training sessions, where they are gaining the skills & knowledge to take them further in the game that they all love to play.

Bowls North would like to thank Kings Meadows for hosting this event at such short notice, along with the Umpires & Markers and all the parents that was there watching and encouraging the Juniors from the sidelines.

The next training session for BN Juniors is to be held on Wednesday December 16 commencing at 4.30 at North Launceston Bowls Club and is open for all BN registered Juniors to attend.
