OPEN STATEWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT – Round 1

OPEN STATEWIDE CHALLENGE REPORT 2021 – Round 1

In the first round of the Open SWC, the women’s side put in a good performance in very trying, freezing cold and extremely windy conditions on a slowish green.

The Open women’s side played North West 1 in the morning game, C Ayton’s rink got off to a flying start and finished strongly winning by 18 shots. R Van Asch rink got off to a slow start but slowly pulled it back to only go down by 4 shots. C Hobb’s rink came up against a determined North West team, they put in a good effort, going down by 21 shots.

In the afternoon games against North West B, C Hobb’s rinks regrouped and jumped out of the box early and kept the pressure on finishing 14 shots up on their opponents.  R Van Asch Rink also applied early pressure to finish 21 shots up. C Ayton’s rink had a much tighter match and won by 5 shots.

A great strong team effort by all our Ladies today in some very difficult conditions.

How often do you see players drinking coffee and hot chocolate all day to try to keep warm so they could perform to their best ability.

Our Northern Men played the North West 1 side in the morning game. The North ended up winning by 2 shots overall with the results being:

M Sims defeated T Male 19-12

M Strochnetter defeated M Nitz 18-14

A Page was defeated by D Gamble 15-24

This was an exceptionally good effort from our players with a feature being the comeback of A Page’s rink who were well down early with the North West rink on fire but managed to close the gap to give our other rinks a chance to win overall.

M Strochnetter rink did very well against State Skip M Nitz and M Sim’s rink was left on the green with two ends to play and scored a two, then one to get us home – A great effort.

In the afternoon game, we played the North West number 2 side which contained a number of former state representatives & players who could easily have been in their number 1 side. It was hard to believe the conditions could be even windier than they were in the morning, but they were, making it difficult for players to put down two bowls the same.

The North lost by 2 shots overall with the results being:

M Sims was defeated by T Simpson 16-22.

M Strochnetter defeated C Windram 26-13.

A Page was defeated by Brown 9-18.

We unfortunately got away to a slow start again with the North West team adjusting to the tricky conditions better than us. We were probably a dozen or so shots behind for the majority of the game but again staged a late comeback & were in a position to win the game in the last few ends, but the North West steadied & fully deserved their win.
