BOWLS NORTH TRIPLES CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019-20

BOWLS NORTH TRIPLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Triples Championship was played at North Launceston Bowls with 11 teams contesting the Open Women’s, 7 in the Open Men’s and 8 in The Minor event.  With only 2 sections in the Men’s section the section winners progressed into the finals.

Men’s Section winners:

Section 1: Hemingway, Alderson, Heron – 6 points +15
Section 2: Sims, Kubacki, C Kubacki – 6 points + 16

Due to inclement weather the final had to be transferred to the indoor centre. Father & son combination of Chase Kubacki and Leigh teamed up with fellow Thunder teammate Michael Sims to take on the other Trevallyn Thunder rink of Graeme Hemmingway, Sean Alderson and David Heron, who was last year’s runner up in this event. The game was evenly matched with the score being 11-10 at the seventh end, then from this mark the Hemmingway team outscored the Sims rink by winning the last three ends to win this year triples championship. Final score was Hemingway 17 to Sims 12. It was great to see another one of the Bowls North Juniors Chase Kubacki playing the Open section of the championship playing some great lead bowls throughout the whole event.

WOMEN’S TRIPLES

In this year’s Bowls North Open triples championship, the sections evenly matched. With three sections the next qualifier would go through to the semi-finals, at the end of two rounds of sectional play five teams were in contention of making the semis.

SECTION WINNERS:

Section 1: Monson, Strochnetter, Gurr – 6 points + 31
Section 2: Zoon, Thompson, Viney – 6 points + 39
Section 3: Simpson, Claridge, Campbell – 4 points + 18
NBQF: Ogden, Dixon, Davis – 4 points + 14

The Ogden rink lined up against Monson team in the first semi. At the eleventh end the game could have gone either way with the scores being Monson 9 to Ogden 7. Maxine Monson’s side scored three lots of multiples in the remaining ends to skip away with the win and progress to the final. Monson 19 defeated Ogden 13. The other semi was again a matchup of Zoon v Simpson. Zoon’s rink scored four shots in the first three ends until Simpson pick up a multiple and the score was Zoon 4 to Simpson 3 at the fifth end.

From end six to sixteen, Simpson’s rink picked up sixteen shots to Zoon’s four, at that stage the score was Simpson 17 to Zoon 9. Maureen’s rink then picked up four shots, then went on to win the last three ends to fall short of making it into the final of the northern triples. Final score was Simpson 20 to Zoon 17.

The final was now down to Simpson Vs Monson. Maxine Monson rink won seventeen ends to Simpsons seven, which included several ends of multiple shoots. Maxine Monson played a great skips game to lead her team to victory. Final score was Monson 27 to Simpson 10. The last two ends of this was not played.

MINOR TRIPLES

Two sections competed with the winners of each section playing off in the final.

SECTION WINNERS:
Section 1: Sothern, Cleaver, Barnett – 6 points + 46
Section 2: G Smith, Arnol, Singh – 6 points + 30

Due to the inclement weather this game was transferred to the indoor centre. With Barnett’s rink winning the first four ends to lead 9 to 1 before Smith rink scored. Greg Smith’s team never gave up winning end fourteen to eighteen but was unable to cover the deficit.
