BOWLS NORTH PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

Trevallyn was host club for the Bowls North Open Women’s and Men’s Pairs championship for 2019-20

Trevallyn was host club for the Bowls North Open Women’s and Men’s Pairs championship for 2019-20 along with Kings Meadows for the sectional play of the Minor Pairs. With 12 Women’s & 12 Men’s teams entered. The Minor section had 11 entries with 2 novice players from Invermay – Jamie Whelan and Paul Jongschaap entering their first Bowls North event.

MEN’S PAIRS

Last year’s champions Matthew Jackson & Chris Roach were in Section 1 which included the runner up from last year Chris Davern & Shane Gurr. In section 2 Michael Sims teamed up with junior player Chase Kubacki and in section 3 father and son duo of Mark and Lachie Strochnetter teamed up to win their section.

SECTION WINNERS:

Section 1: Bassett/Walker Davis – 6 points +21

Section 2: Davern/Harris – 6 points +28

Section 3: Strochnetter/Strochnetter – 6 points +24

NBQF: Davern/Gurr – 4 points + 5

 

In the semi-finals the game between Bassett/Walker Davis and Davern/Gurr the game could be won by either team. Davern/Gurr scored a five on end ten and three on end eleven to lead 13-10. Bassett/Walker Davis then fought back to score a three on end 13 and one to have the match go to an extra end to see who was going to continue the championships. The last end was thrilling to watch with great draw bowling by all the players involved. Bassett/Walker Davis scored one, on the extra end to make the final of the Bowls North Open Men’s pairs. The other semi was between Strochnetter/Strochnetter and Davern/Harris. The game was evenly matched. At the tenth end the score was eight to Davern/Harris and five to Strochnetter/Strochnetter The Strochnetter duo won ends ten to twelve. Davern/Harris won the next end to have a 2-shot lead with 2 ends to play. The Strochnetter father & son combination won the next 2 ends to proceed into the BN Open Pairs Championship.

The final could have gone either way, but in the end Bassett/Walker Davis overcome Strochnetter/Strochnetter to take the final 16 to 12.

WOMEN’S OPEN PAIRS

The Women’s Open pairs had three sections, with teams all evenly match, and some very close games where played during the sectional play of the championship.  Four teams where in contention for the final berth into the semis finals as next best qualifier.

Section winners:

Section 1: Viney/Zoon – 4 points + 15

Section 2: Fletcher/Curtis – 6 points + 15

Section 3: Lee/Saunders – 6 points + 26

NBQF: Huett/Middap – 4 points + 22

 

In the first match Zoon/Viney played Fletcher/Curtis.  Scores was Zoon nine to Fletcher five on nine end, then Zoon/Viney won eight of the remaining ends to earn themselves a berth in the final. Final score was Zoon/Viney 21 to Fletcher/Curtis 12.  Semi-final number two was between Saunders/Lee and Middap/Huett with Lee/Saunders having a 4-nil lead after 2 ends, then they were unable to score for the next seven ends, with Huett/Middap leading eleven to six at the eleventh end. Then Saunders/Lee scored seven shots in three ends and hit the front on the scorecard. Huett/Middap scored the next two ends and on end twenty the score was Huett/Middap 18 to Saunders/Lee 15. Saunders/Lee where only able to score one on the last end. Final score was Huett/Middap 18 to Saunders/Lee 16.  In the final between Zoon/Viney and Huett/Middap the game was close at end five, with Huett/Middap leading by one, then the next six consecutive ends were won by Zoon/Viney, who then lead 14 to 5 after the eleventh end. Then from end fourteen Zoon/Viney scored thirteen shots to win the BN Open women’s Pairs championship for 2019-20.

MINOR PAIRS

Three sections played in the Minor pair’s championship, with defending champions White/Shingles playing in section 3. Midlands Junior bowler Bayley McCarthy and his father Chad Morrison came out victorious in this section. Section 2 came down to the last game played to see who would play in the semi-finals. With the rink of Smith/Singh having a draw with Atkinson /Fraser. The Section was won by Bassett/Van Riel.

 

Section Winners:

Section 1: Wheatley/Causon – 6 points +10

Section 2: Bassett/Van Riel – 4 points + 24

Section 3: McCarthy/Morrison – 6 points +34

NBQF:  Kidd/Thomas – 4 points +6

 

In the first semi Basset/Van Riel started strong scoring 11 shots on the first 2 ends. Wheatley/Causon slowly gained momentum winning the next five ends and picking up a four on end thirteen. Bassett/Van Riel won three of the last five ends to win the game. Final Scores Bassett/Van Riel 19 Wheatley/Causon 17.

The second semi saw favourites McCarthy/Morrison play Kidd/Thomas. Kidd/Thomas started well, leading 7 to 3 on the fifth end. Then McCarthy/Morrison scored four shots and the scores was level after six ends. Then Kidd/Thomas scored eleven shots from nine ends, McCarthy/Morrison could not score no more than one shot per end. Final Scores Kidd/Thomas 18 to McCarthy/Morrison 12

In the final Bassett/Van Riel was no match for the combination of Kidd/Thomas, who scored several multiples throughout the game and won the match convincingly. Final scores Kidd/Thomas 21 to Bassett/Van Riel 6
